  • A pink-coloured parasol blows in the wind on a seafront during the winter off-season. Looking miserable and wintry, the landscape shows us the grim weather of a grey day on England's south coast - except perhaps, for the bright colours of the umbrella which blows on a sea breeze. The six-seater of a bench is empty too, as visitors to this area have yet to return to the promenades and pavements of this East Sussex coastal resort.

  • Dragging a baby's buggy as family members go out for a walk on open snowbound countryside in North Somerset. It is Boxing Day, the day after Christmas and the traditional family walk is more of an event this year with much of Britain covered in heavy snows during a particularly nasty period of climactic freezing conditions. Rather than push, a father pulls his child's buggy through the snow accompanied by another man and a younger boy all of whose legs are in the same walking positions. The female members of the group are out of this picture and in the way that walks often play out, females and males speak with their own gender. The landscape is that of a rural hill with a grey sky filled with more snow cloud and bare wintry trees are behind, their branches bare.

  • As blue dawn light becomes another wintry day in south London, the glow of a car's brake lights shines through a covering of fresh snow. The driver has only swept the vehicle's back window with a rear wiper but with her foot on the brake pedal, she is about to set off on a drive to work this morning on roads that have controversially, not been gritted or salted by council highway workers. The surface is therefore still snowy in this residential area of Herne Hill, SE24, London and is a treacherous surface on which to maintain wheel and tyre (tire) traction and many accidents will result, including the heavy lorry (truck) which is about to climb this hill and which will soon prevent him from going much further.

  • An almost full moon rises over a wintry landscape on 28th of December 2020 in Stow, Scottish Borders, United Kingdom. The few trees up in the hills are barren and black and the white snow almost covers the fields.

  • It is 07.45 on a dark, wintry morning and from behind, we follow a lone commuter who walks along a snow-covered path in Ruskin Park, an otherwise green space in the south London borough of Herne Hill, Lambeth. Street lights are still illuminating the road in the background and the blue light of early morning has fast becoming another day of snow showers and chilly temperatures. No grit or salt has been sprinkled on this slippery path and the person walks carefully carrying an umbrella from falling sleet which is soon to turn to rain as the temperature rises. Tall ash trees whose trunks form an avenue of cover and the commuter proceeds towards their neighbours to the station beyond. A single 4x4 car makes its way through this still quiet street with lights blazing.

  • A man of Afro-Caribbean birth, clutches at his scarf to keep out freezing temperatures during a cold snap in south London. Falling snow has settled on the man's black hair and even turned his eyelashes white after his walk from home to a local bus stop from where he is trying to commute to work. Because of skin colour, the white snowflakes make this picture a largely monochrome scene, adding to the bleak sense of wintry conditions. He is clearly unprepared for winter, wearing neither hat nor gloves and looks chilled to the bone thanks to the heat he's losing through his head and upper body. The climate of this part of the northern hemisphere can be ferocious for those ill-equipped or at the very least, unpleasant for those from warmer parts of the world.

  • A football pitch and empty landscape of snowbound goal posts in wintry public park in south London. During a prolonged cold spell of bad weather, snow fell continuously on the capital on Sunday, allowing families the chance to enjoy the bleak conditions, here in Ruskin Park in the borough of Lambeth. The football goalpost, part of a soccer pitch used by local teams is otherwise unused as the weather forces local games to be cancelled before the grass beneath is again revealed. In the distance are Edwardian period houses beneath 100 year-old ash trees.

  • A local lady shopper passes-by a Closed Road sign on a hill in south London during wintry snows. Rather than drive to her local supermarket, the woman has instead parked her car in a safer place and walked to where she can stock up on provisions. She has made her way up the incline from the shop and looks over to the sign telling others that this road is temporily shut to vehicles. During a mid-winter morning, when commuters are struggling to reach their work places, the capital also finds it hard for transport and infrastructure to keep running as normal. Local councils facing government cuts also find it hard to maintain services during such challenging conditions.

  • London bus passengers endure the misery of another morning commute into the city. As they sit looking miserable, squashed in the bus, its windows steamed up they are unaware of The Chronicles of Narnia movie poster that shows itself to the outsider. In the panoramic banner often used by the film industry for forthcoming movie productions, we see the main characters from Narnia in heroic, romantic and epic story roles. But the reality of another commute into London is also a heroic experience when wintry conditions often stop the flow of public transport and its infrastructure. The Chronicles of Narnia is a series of seven fantasy novels for children written by C. S. Lewis. It is considered a classic of children's literature and is the author's best known work, having sold over 100 million copies in 47 languages.

  • As blue dawn light brightens to become another wintry day in south London a commuter awaits the arrival of a distant red bus to climb a slippery hill. Standing by the timetable of the bus stop on Red Post Hill in the borough of Southwark traffic approaches slowly on a road that controversially appears not to have been gritted properly for vehicles to maintain a proper grip on this snowy surface. Headlights point uphill and the freshly-fallen snow has started to freeze so wheel and tyre traction will prove ever-difficult for those trying to journey to work.

  • With a look of delight on her face, a four year-old girl stamps through fallen snow in a field near her home in Bielefeld, Germany. Wearing a vibrant red bobble hat and matching coat, she smiles towards the viewer with the pleasure of any child enjoying the excitement of fresh snow. Ski or sledge tracks can be seen at her feet but she is the only person in this empty landscape, as if she's walking on her own through the snowy hills. It is the winter of 1967 and the reds are very vibrant and dominant from the Kodachrome film used which also has a wonderful muted blue colour cast in the mid-tones giving the picture a chilly, wintry feel reminiscent of the classic days of early photography when shifts in color gave a faded and dated look.

  • A 12 year-old boy walks along a frozen rural road with his pet dog following alongside during wintry conditions in North Somerset. The viewer also follows on as the lad walks towards his home on a hill, set near the bare mid-winter trees during a particularly nasty period of the Christmas holiday period. The boy's house is in the distance with wood smoke curling from two chimneys. The smoke wafts across the remote road in the Mendip Hills, recently cleared of snow but still deceptively icy. The low sun is slightly obscured by bare branches and offers little warmth to this bleak landscape.

  • Laden with loaves of bread, crusts and slices in supermarket bags, three local people are involved in a feeding frenzy for a herd or ‘eyrar’ (the collective noun) of swans who gather impatiently for their turn under the pier at Southport, Cheshire. Dozens of these beautiful birds are also surrounded by a flocks of geese, ducks and pigeons in this wintry scene alongside the chilly low-tide waters of Marine Lake, under the ironwork of Marine Parade.

  • Detail of an arched stone bridge at Kinlochspelve, Isle of Mull, Scotland. The close-up view shows us the bridge's strength largely given by the beautiful workmanship by those using local materials for this road overpass. Only farm vehicles and small cars generally drive over but such structures need to withstand harsh winters where weather can help them deteriorate. An arch is a structure that spans a space and supports a load. Arches appeared as early as the 2nd millennium BC in Mesopotamian brick architecture and their systematic use started with the Ancient Romans who were the first to apply the technique to a wide range of structures.

Sachsenhausen was a Nazi concentration camp in Oranienburg, 35 kilometres (22 miles) north of Berlin, Germany, used primarily for political prisoners from 1936 to the end of the Third Reich in May 1945. After World War II, when Oranienburg was in the Soviet Occupation Zone, the structure was used as an NKVD special camp until 1950. Executions took place at Sachsenhausen, especially of Soviet prisoners of war. 30,000 inmates died there from exhaustion, disease, malnutrition, pneumonia, etc. The remaining buildings and grounds are now open to the public as a museum.

Wearing high-visibility jackets and flashing strobe lights on their handlebars, as recommended by safety campaigners and the police, they can be seen by motorists during rush-hour. • One shovel-full of road grit has been left in a small pile at the kerb of a side road in East Dulwich, South London. Left by workers from the borough of Southwark, this modest supply is symbolic of the controversial problem of local government running low on street grits and salts that help prevent thousands of traffic collisions and pedestrian falls every winter. In January of 2010 (following the equally snow fall of February 2009) councils were caught unprepared for adverse weather which virtually brought towns and cities and rural communities to a standstill. We look down at the fallen snow, trodden by countless pairs of boots which compress the snow and make it an often treacherous surface on which to tread.

During a mid-winter morning, when commuters are struggling to reach their work places, the capital also finds it hard for transport and infrastructure to keep running as normal. With its headlights on half-beam, the snow is still making this hill treacherous to climb as this heavy vehicle again starts from the bus stop, having lost its traction on the slippery road surface. A passenger alights, carefully stepping down from the bus onto the snowy kerb as other people walk uphill, preferring to make their own way. The snow rests on surrounding Victorian house roofs and in the distance; it is a bleak day in the misty urban light where high-rise flats (apartments) can be seen.

  • Duart Castle near Craignure, Isle of Mull, Scotland. Standing proudly on a cliff top guarding the Sound of Mull, Duart enjoys one of the most spectacular and unique positions on the West Coast of Scotland. For over 400 years this has been the base of the Scots Clan Maclean's sea-borne power. Duart was originally a rectangular wall enclosing a courtyard. In 1350 Lachlan Lubanach, the 5th Chief, married Mary Macdonald, the daughter of the Lord of the Isles and she was given Duart as her dowry. In 1691 the Macleans surrendered Duart and all their lands on Mull to the Duke of Argyll. The Castle, although in a fairly ruinous condition was used as a garrison for Government troops until 1751. It was then abandoned until 1910 when it was purchased by Sir Fitzroy Maclean, 26th Chief.

  • The upright remains of a Pennygowan Cemetery (Caol Fhaoileann), Salen Isle of Mull, Scotland. Within the chapel, erected on a modern base, is the lower part of a cross-shaft 1.33m high above ground. On the front there has been a Crucifix; below this a large plant scroll terminates in a griffin. At the foot is a galley with sail set. This cross dates to between 1500 and 1560 and the ruined chapel is probably of early 13th century date. No medieval references to it have been identified, and its dedication is unknown though it is referred to both as a 'Chappell' and as a 'paroach'. The building may already have been derelict at this period, although the earliest evidence of its condition dates from 1787 when it was shown as 'an old kirk' on a map of Torosay parish.

This ruined chapel, which served the north portion of the parish of Torosay, is probably of early 13th century date. No medieval references to it have been identified, and its dedication is unknown. The records of the Synod of Argyll in the middle of the 17th century show some uncertainty as to the status of the charge; it is referred to both as a 'Chappell' and as a 'paroach'. • Creel-caught Velvet and Green Crab fished between Fionnphort and Iona, Isle of Mull, Scotland. The contents of 500 creels is taken every week by truck and sold to Spain. On each line are 25 creels that are spaced out in different areas of the nearby bays. The main fishing on the Ross of Mull, Ulva Ferry and Tobermory is now is commercial shell fishing with baited traps(creels) for lobsters (homarus gamarus), edible brown crabs( cancer pagurus), Prawn (Norwegian Lobster) and velvet swimming crab (necora puber). Scallop dredgers and Prawn trawlers also operate from both ends of the island, dragging the seabed for their catch. Before the late 1960s shell fishing with creels was generally carried out on a seasonal or part time basis allied to crofting, farming or another shore based job. Small boats today still operate this way.
