  • A valentines Day merchandise retail window in the City of London. The word Love has been pasted on to the window in large lettering above Happy Valentines. Valentine's Day takings are expected to exceed £1.3bn, says the British Retail Consortium. The spending is led by generous — or panicking — men. It was estimated last year that British men would fork out £622m between them, compared to the £354m spent by women

  • Employees in a central London office work dilligently alongside the reminders of vacations that colleagues and friends have taken. Picture postcard souvenirs have been lined up as a display of the perfect holiday when they have returned to work to put their shoulders to the grindstone. It is a scene of wishful thinking, of 'wish you were here!' and of looking forward to the next break from the toil of their careers so by showing the idyllic locations of their dreams with these visual reminders, can they imagine the beauty of these places: Tenby in south Wales, the Lake District in northern England and a country hall set in, perhaps, the Scottish hills. An out of focus worker stares intensely into his PC, perhaps thinking of escapism and a life outside these four walls.

  • Household refuse pollutes a coral beach on Meedu Island, an indigenous community in the Republic of the Maldives in the Indian Ocean. Packaging, foodstuffs and general waste has been tossed away on this otherwise beautiful place, north of the capital Male. Unfortunately, the practice of tossing away one's rubbish is a normal practice in this culture, the local people selfishly unconcerned about the future of their habitat and the health of their community. Only a few miles from Meedu are islands that serve as holiday resorts where families from Europe travel by air for the perffect vacation - unaware that fly-tipping is so widespread that it threatens this nation's worldwide status as a paradise on earth.

  • On a bright summer afternoon, a young spoiled girl shows-off by riding her favourite motorized Barbie trike along The Parade, the main promenade in the north Welsh seaside town of Llandudno, Wales. Wearing a bright pink helmet and travelling on the matching pink toy bike, she trundles along with the low-tide coast over her left shoulder. Barbie is a best-selling fashion doll launched in 1959 and produced by Mattel, Inc. The brand's merchandising reaches far and wide to countries and cultures around the world and this little girl seems to be the happiest on the beach, enjoying a generous present perhaps from a parent. She is the exact age that Mattel are targeting when they market these toys to accompany their dolls and accessories though the industry has come under fire for its controversial stereotyping of gender and subtle sexuality.

But after overnight rain, the inks and dyes of home-printed pictures streaked and ran obliterating these messages and victims’ faces. DNA samples were taken at the Armory so human remains might be identified so it was a point of focus for those with missing relatives who attached thousands of posters to walls with pictures and messages to loved-ones in the hope of being reunited.
