  • Pointe shoes belonging to a prima ballerina in her dsressing room at the Palais Garnier, Paris. A pointe shoe is a type of shoe worn by ballet dancers when performing pointe work. Pointe shoes were conceived in response to the desire for dancers to appear weightless and sylph-like and have evolved to enable dancers to dance en pointe (on the tips of their toes) for extended periods of time. They are normally worn by female dancers, though male dancers may wear them for unorthodox roles such as the ugly stepsisters in Cinderella, or in dance companies that feature men dancing as women, such as Les Ballets Trockadero. They are manufactured in a variety of colors, most commonly in shades of light pink.

  • "Garden ballet." With hands outstretched, a ten month-old infant supports her weight on some garden chairs as she learns to stand on her own two feet. Without the strength in her legs, she loses her balance and her mother stands behind holding her daughter by the waist preventing her from falling over. It is a warm summer afternoon with both mother and child barefoot on the back garden patio and we see the experience of an adult encouraging a developing human being with the confidence to stand erect with back straight. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • "Homo erectus." At the exact moment that a young human being walks for the first time, an eleven month-old girl infant conquers her fear and takes her first tentative upright unaided steps. After months of building lower leg strength by pushing and leaning against household objects, she now leaves the protective hands of a delighted but nervous mother who relishes the joyous moment of her offspring's great achievement. The girl's legs and hips help propel her forward motion, naturally making her an upright bi-pedal species. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • Circus acrobats perform high above auditor Ernst & Young's staff during a company Academy Day held for 3,000 of their London employees at Excel in London's Docklands England. Lit with blue light by powerful spotlights, the two girls are suspended in mid-air using hoops attached to safety ropes. They both make dramatic shapes in the air to demonstrate confidence, synchronised teamwork and co-operation between partners, the themes of this corporate day out of the office. The employees out of sight below are attending this fair where motivational pep-talks from executives, outside speakers and gurus will talk to large groups of E & Y personnel so their presence on this day away from the office is vital for the year's business ahead.

  • Although we see the arms and bodies of three young African American men jumping high for a basketball, there is a fourth arm trying to make contact with the ball as all four males leap high at the basket ball net which has just bounced off the ring, scoring no points. We see the face of one black man whose white teeth and silver-coloured necklace shine in the sunshine. He looks up to watch the other hands fight for the ball’s possession as the teams battle for supremacy. In the background is a mural painted on the court’s wall showing a running dribbling basket ball player who seems to be leaping over the head of one player in the foreground. There are large tattooed deltoid shoulder muscles and masses of energy on show in this scene of ultimate determination and desire to win.

  • Tourists crowd in the Salon de Mars in the King’s Grand Apartment, Versaille, Paris. The choice of this military theme which inspired all the decoration of the salon can be explained by the fact that this large room was originally meant to serve as the guard room for the parade apartment. It was later reserved, at evening soirees, for music and dancing, so that it was commonly known as the "ballroom". The court ballets were strictly regulated and required many rehearsals; the princes took part in them, sometimes mixed in with professional dancers. The Palace of Versailles or simply Versailles, is a royal château in Versailles in the Île-de-France region of France. In French it is the Château de Versailles.
