  • The volcanic terrain and aerials, used for both surveilance and transmissions, proliferate 27th May 1997, on Ascension, a small area of approximately 88 km² isolated volcanic island in the equatorial waters of the South Atlantic Ocean, roughly midway between the horn of South America and Africa. It is governed as part of the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha. Organised settlement of Ascension Island began in 1815, when the British garrisoned it as a precaution after imprisoning Napoleon I on Saint Helena. In January 2016 the UK Government announced that an area around Ascension Island was to become a huge marine reserve, to protect its varied and unique ecosystem, including some of the largest marlin in the world, large populations of green turtle, and the islands own species of frigate bird. With an area of 234,291 square kilometres 90,460 sq mi, slightly more than half of the reserve will be closed to fishing.

  • A young boy in a field plays with a ewe and chickens at Drusillas Park Zoo. He reaches down to the ground to see if the chickens behind a wire fence will come nearer while the ewe is held tight by a farm hand. Educating the young with hands-on experiences help the urban to understand the nature of farming and the sources of their food. But after this contact with livestock, the boy needs to wash his hands thoroughly as the risk of infections such as E.coli are significant – as has been discovered in other park zoos and farms. Cattle and sheep are the main carriers of E.coli O157 so hand washing using warm water and soap is an important and effective control. It is recommended that washing after working with or touching animals, their dung, manure, slurry or sewage. E.coli O157 can live for some months in the soil.

  • Airline passengers recently arrived from India wait in line at Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5 transit concourse. The middle-aged travellers queue patiently after their long-haul flight and two believe that masks will protect themselves from airborne diseases and infections, not wishing to be exposed to Swine Flu or perhaps SARS, in a hectic public place where such bacteria can be transmitted from one human being to another. But a lady at the front of the queue has lowered her mask while the man at the back keeps his covering the mouth and nose. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009).

  • Cajun dancing in Freds Lounge on 28th February 2020 in Mamou, Louisiana, United States. Freds Lounge rarely advertises, yet the pub that is open only on Saturday mornings is known worldwide. The small town of Mamou is one of the last bastions of Cajun culture. On the outside, Freds place looks like any ordinary red brick beer joint. But promptly at 9:15 on Saturday mornings the music and dancing starts igniting a two-hour radio show transmitted throughout the area. Freds Lounge is unique in many ways. For one thing we serve alcohol at eight in the morning. Even for us Cajuns that unique, Libby, the owner, says with a laugh. She recommends starting with a spicy Bloody Mary. Thats our breakfast. We call it Freds omelet.

  • Three days after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, President George W Bush tours Ground Zero, the scene of two airlliners crashing into the World Trade Center. We see him live on CNN television which is transmitting pictures to a rest-stop service station in New York State. The caption reads 'America's New War' and 'Pres. Bush visiting with volunteers and rescuers' which turned out to be his finest hour in those days and months following the atrocities. A Burger King restaurant also lends itself to a President of the fast food and fast war era of American politics.

  • Taking notes from an air band receiving radio, plane spotters log aircraft serial numbers and other details in notebooks near their perimeter fence at London's Heathrow airport. A large man has a pair of binoculars and an old SLR film camera and leans against his Peugeot car's bonnet (hood) to record the obsessive facts about airliners that pass overhead as they approach the runways of West London. His fellow-aviation enthusiast checks the radio that transmits the voices of pilots and air traffic controllers. In Britain, plane spotters are regarded as eccentric and sad but not trespassers. Some have been accused of spying near foreign military airfields. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903.
