  • Sitting drunk on a mid-town sidewalk (pavement), a construction worker wipes tears from his eyes. The man has driven from his mid-west home to offer help at the hazardous Ground Zero where for the past 4 days and nights he has been uncovering debris and human remains after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Exhausted and emotional, he was sent away for his own and the safety of others and alcohol was his first purchase. New Yorkers praised their heroes for assisting their city (and America) in their hour of need but here, passers-by stepped over him complaining of his drunken state. The now lonely man is distressed, tormented and psychologically fragile but gets no help. With his few possessions, his hard hat and flag, mask and cans of Budweiser we see a man at his lowest ebb.

Other models are seen below the crosses - models of animal garden ornaments and mantelpiece furniture.

  • A tray of sardines fry on an outdoor grill in the Bairro Alto district - or Upper City - the oldest of Lisbon's residential quarters. We see in detail 16 fish (sardinhas assadas in Portuguese) all lying in the sunlight on their sides in neat, parralel rows with their clouded eyes staring up towards the viewer. They still have their silvery, scaley skin and Portuguese sardines are traditionally be served with finely-chopped potatoes, considered to be the sweetest and fattest sardines in the world. In Portugal, more than 60 percent of the national sardine catch is consumed fresh: 12 pounds a person, on average, compared to only 2 pounds of the fish canned. The sardine season - when the fish are plump and juicy - lasts from the end of May to the end of October, although the fat fish can keep coming until December. Seated beneath this huge piece of scaled equine head are young people, leaning and sitting on the horse's plinth. This is a popular stopping off place for those enjoying late summer temperatures. The head stands on the end of its nose, a balancing act effective as a standalone piece of art that represents the carrying of wounded masters to safety that had an extraordinary resonance for the artist. Commissioned to create the piece by JCB founder Sir Anthony and Lady Bamford in January 2006 – just after Fiddian-Green had been diagnosed as suffering from a rare form of leukaemia. The Marwari breed was famous in India for centuries as the mount of the Rajput cavalry.

  • A detail of an ill-fated Comet airliner door now confined to the ground at the Imperial War Museum at Duxford, England. Peeling paint and a make-shift padlock shows this museum piece's age and exposure to the outside elements. A year after entering commercial service the Comets began suffering problems, with three of them breaking up during mid-flight in well-publicised accidents. This was later found to be due to catastrophic metal fatigue, not well understood at the time, in the airframes. The Comet was withdrawn from service and extensively tested to discover the cause; the first incident had been incorrectly blamed on adverse weather.

  • Window display figure of a traditional Chinese herbalist's shop in London's West End. The shadows of known cures such as anxiety, depression and hay fever are reflected on the body of this male miniature. One of Chinese herbology’s four natures is the degree of yin and yang, namely cold (extreme yin), cool, warm and hot (extreme yang). The patient's internal balance of yin and yang is taken into account when the herbs are selected. Medicinal herbs of "hot", yang nature are used when the person is thought to be suffering from internal cold that requires to be purged, or when the patient is believed to have a general cold constituency. Sometimes an ingredient is added to offset the extreme effect of one herb.
