  • Among headstones and graves, two local children play in the unkempt cemetery attached to the Blaenau Baptist Church in the south Wales town of Abertillery (Welsh: Abertyleri). Along with their pet Labrador dog who enjoys joining in on the fun, the children are playing safely in the open-air of this Welsh community. Rows of terraced Victorian homes line the distant end of this ground and then clinging to far hill side and beyond. Its population rose steeply during the period of (now defunct) mining development in South Wales, being 10,846 in 1891 and 21,945 ten years later. Lying in the mountainous mining district of the former counties of Monmouthshire and Glamorganshire, in the valley of the Ebbw Fach. In 2003, Abertillery was found to have the cheapest house prices in the United Kingdom, according to a survey by the Halifax Building Society.

  • Seen low from behind stage, a male voice choir are lined up to sing during their performance at an open-air temporary auditorium during the Lambeth Show, an inner-city cultural and family event held annually in Dulwich Park, a leafy suburb of South London. The choristers are dressed in white shirts which are untidily untucked from their dark trousers (pants). Their heads echo the purple, yellow and red spots from the overhead lights. The front of stage is covered by a curved ribbed roof structure that arches over the mens' heads. The singers look small in scale to the cavernous height of this ceiling, occupying a small percentage of the frame. We cannot see the choir's conductor, nor their audience but we get an impression of wide area in which to project their voices

  • Amid post-War inner-city concrete, an elderly man struggles up a slope in Birmingham’s infamous Bull Ring, a development of open-air market stalls, offices and a new indoor shopping centre, the first indoor city-centre shopping centre in the UK. It symbolised everything horrid about architecture in a modern Britain. The words ‘Unspoilt by progress’ seems to be a statement of extreme falsehood, a lie for those using this grim feature of modernism. The market began in medieval 1154 but it was its 1964 regeneration that gave it a reputation of an oppressive urban monstrosity though it was considered the height of modernity. But higher rents meant traders turned away and the public shunned subways and escalators which stopped working regularly. Much disliked by the public it contributed to the popular conception that Birmingham was a ‘concrete jungle’.

  • During an August heatwave, the population of Brixton and many others from all over London, bask in the glorious weather at the Brockwell (Brixton) Lido in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, South London. The Lido is a magnet for families, select groups, the young and old and represents an amalgam of humanity who enjoy the benefits of outdoor bathing and the friendship of meeting old friends and new acquaitances. We see two men of Afro-carribean origin who have a corner of the Lido to themselves. One wears a towel wrapped around his lower-body and sits, arms folded with a look of territorial superiority while the other applies sun lotion to his leg. There is little space left on the full pavement which retains its solar heat long after the sun has left the quadrangle of the lido's oblong design but their colourful towels and possessions are spread out on the paving stones along with childrens' toys including an Action Man toy soldier who is also tanning himself. It is a scene of fun for all ages and backgrounds. Brockwell Lido is a large, open air swimming pool in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill, London. It opened in July 1937, closed in 1990 and after a local campaign was re-opened in 1994. Brockwell Lido was designed by HA Rowbotham and TL Smithson of the London County Council's Parks Department to replace Brockwell Park bathing pond. It is now a Grade II listed building

The Lido is a magnet for families, select groups, the young and old and represents an amalgam of humanity who enjoy the benefits of outdoor bathing and the friendship of meeting old friends and new acquaitances. We see a mass of people in late afternoon light with deep tans from the extended hot summer. There is little space left on the full pavement which retains its solar heat long after the sun has left the quadrangle of the lido's oblong design. They lay reading a newspaper or book, spread themselves on small towels or just chat to fellow-bathers. Swimmers are in the unheated water, others jump in or stand on the edge thinking about their next dive. It is a scene of chaotic fun for all ages and backgrounds. • Chips, burgers and fast-food is popular at the outdoor the Grade II listed Brockwell (Brixton) Lido in Brockwell Park, Herne Hill. The Lido is a magnet, an oasis, for city dwellers to escape, if only for an hour from the pressures of fast urban life. Many enjoy the benefits of outdoor bathing and the friendship of meeting old friends. • Family eating in restaurant and and sleeping homeless man in central London doorway. With a theme of stripes that appear on the window and the walls of the doorway, we see the wealth of a modern society where a father can feed his family at the table - versus the poverty of the unfortunate, a man so desperate he has to sleep in the open air on a hot Spring day, his hand outstretched asking for passers-by to offer loose change in a crushed pot. The latest annual figures show that 6,437 people were seen rough sleeping in London in 2012-13, compared with 5,768 the previous year, a 13% rise year on year and an increase of 62% since 2010-11.

  • A crowd of workers listen to speeches by their trade union during a council strike in Liverpool. A sea of faces looks towards us, their expressions serious and concerned at the loss of their jobs and livelihoods. Their trade union has organised this meeting out in the open air in the city centre, a protest against unfair reduction of earnings and an erosion of working conditions. These people are English Liverpool council workers recently made redundant and have gathered in the city centre to express their willingness to act againist their former-employers.

  • Female colleagues enjoy a chat over an alfresco lunch in the city alongside an art installation of women at the beach. Rather suggestively we see, one lady eating a fresh banana to suggest a sexual act but this is in the open air at one of the City of London’s financial district’s landmarks, Broadgate that is adjacent to Liverpool Street Station whose arched Victorian roof is seen in the background. The scene is of the female gender, taking a well-earned break from office life, while perhaps, dreaming of and planning their next holiday vacation on a tropical beach. The working women and their leisurely counterparts are juxtaposed from an unknown artist’s installation in London. The banana, by its very curved shape has long been the butt of sexual innuendo and double-entendre. The surrogate penis being the perfect adult pun.
