It is a scene about the golden age of steam travel - an era of smoke and soot when the locomotive ruled he country's rail network - and that of the modern era of road transportation. This tourist coach is parked near the famous buildings of Westminster Abbey and the Houses of Parliament, allowing visitors to disembark and leave again soon after their tour of the area.

The hotspot has surprised developers and passers-by below and which has already melted a parked car and left soft street fittings smouldering in Eastcheap Street, City of London, the capital's financial district. Thermometers placed in the street reached 144F (62 celcius) and city workers poured out of their offices at lunchtime to winess the strange phenomena of intense light and heat.

  • A Ford Anglia is parked in an empty road and homegrown beds of dahlias grow in the front garden of a council house in the early 1960s. Looking through the clean window we see net curtains (drapes) and in the foreground are the flowers showing a prospering post-war era. The car is the only one parked in the road at a time when car ownership was still to become popular among the working and middle-classes is estates like this. The colours are brilliantly reproduced and recorded by Kodachrome film by an amateur photographer in 1963. The picture shows us a memory of nostalgia in an era from the last century.

It is late one evening in central London, in a suburb known as Herne Hill, SE24 in the borough of Lambeth. We see across the metropolis from quiet and expensive period homes, whose owners would typically be white middle-class, across to the blocks of flats (apartments) in the Loughborough Estate, a far rougher location for street gangs and high crime rates. Owners' cars are parked under streetlights and ash trees and lights shine out from living rooms and bedrooms.
