Sharing airspace with both general and commercial aviation, the HEMS helicopters that service the capital need to be under control of local air traffic rules and regulations, making for a safe environment for different aircraft to operate in - separated by set altitude distances. They may appear to be close but scale and perspective makes it look closer than they actually are. (KSSAAT) fly state of the art Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) aircraft operating 365 days a year, out of their base at Marden in Kent and Redhill in Surrey. • A businessman stands over a Victorian-style shoe-shiner in a corner of Leadenhall Market in the City of London. His black shoe is resting on a small brass plinth for the leather to be buffed up with the help of Kiwi polish and the efficient speed of a good brushing technique with the final stage being a dusting to bring the best reflective shine. Their relationship is that of paying-customer and servant and we look downwards from the perspective of the wealthier man, a superior view that the client feels when paying for such a service. Wearing a red uniform, the shoe-shiner is on bended-knees, his weight resting on a soft, red cushion, protection from the cold, hard pavement while looking down, concentrating on the job in hand.

  • We see the head and shoulders of a man in military uniform who stands motionless beside the American flag. he is at a graduation ceremony for United States Air Force pilots who have just passed a week-long survival courseheld at the Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane, Washington. Its highy-trained personel conducts a survival, escape and evasion course which combat pilots and air crew need to pass before rejoining their units for real-time warfare. Conducted, in hangars and the surrounding forests, it forms part of an extensive physical and psychological assessment of young aviators on active service. In the future any one of them may be shot down behind enemy lines and need to use the lessons passed-on here to help facilitate their rescue by US forces. One pilot who passed this course in 1991, himself a Spokane-born boy, was F-16 pilot Scott O'Grady. He put his skills learned here to the test while evading Serb forces before being airlifted to safety and a hero's Presidential welcome.

  • A P4 bus service destination Lewisham Station climbs Herne Hill early after fresh overnight snowfall in the south London area. During a mid-winter morning, when commuters are struggling to reach their work places, the capital also finds it hard for transport and infrastructure to keep running as normal. With its headlights on half-beam, the snow is still making this hill treacherous to climb as this heavy vehicle again starts from the bus stop, having lost its traction on the slippery road surface. A passenger alights, carefully stepping down from the bus onto the snowy kerb as other people walk uphill, preferring to make their own way. The snow rests on surrounding Victorian house roofs and in the distance; it is a bleak day in the misty urban light where high-rise flats (apartments) can be seen.

  • Using a cloth, a waiter picks up a hot bowl of Butter Squash soup ready for a la carte service in the kitchens at the Vivre restaurant in Sofitel, a 605 bedroom, 27 suite and 45 meeting room accommodation and business hub Heathrow Airport's hub hotel attached to Terminal 5. A stack of clean and unused plates are ready for use on the hot plate that warms them and we see the waiter leaning over in shadow, carefully taking hold of the bowl so that none of the liquid spills. The man is wearing a smart white shirt and is about to take the dish over to the customer's table. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009).

  • Leaping over waves, London Fire Brigade (LFB) fire fighters train on the River Thames using an inflatable dinghy. Crossing the wake of another vessel, the inflatable jumps, as the fire-fighter holds on tight to a rope at the boat's bow while two colleagues sit on the read for ultimate balance so the dinghy can ride over the turbulent waters. Spray from the waves splash them although they wear waterproofs and fire service helmets.

  • With his back to the viewer, a young boy reads prayers and hymns in a local parish Catholic Church during his local Sunday service in Evreux, Normandy, France. Surrounded by members of his rural, French community the boy sits pretty much on his own, left alone to experience the congregation and the regular Mass of the Catholic church. The pews are wooden and old and in the distance we see the priest (Le Pretre) conducting the service with older people towards the front. It is estimated that 60% of France's population are Catholic, though much fewer are regular churchgoers. The church is organised into 98 dioceses, served by 20,523 priests.

  • The Corran Ferry that crosses on wintry evening on Inverscaddle Bay, Ardgour, Scotland. On a bleak and grey summer evening, with low clouds descending on surrounding hills and mountains, we see the still waters of this Scottish lake in the background. Two foot passengers who travel free stride down a ramp towards the waiting boat. Here, there is a sea crossing and the 10-minute Corran ferry service runs every 30 minutes from Corran to Ardgour, saving a round-trip of over 30 miles. So rurally-relaxed is the service that even if the ramp is raised, a late driver may still make the sailing.

  • The Virgin-sponsored HEMS (Helicopter Emergency Medical Service) Explorer helicopter lands among trees in Ruskin Park, London. Used as a landing point for these helicopters has become increasingly important for head trauma patients needing to reach specialist medical teams at the nearby Kings College Hospital o Denmark Hill. As the aircraft slows and swoops its pilots put it down on empty ground to where an NHS ambulance can access the stretchered victim. London’s Air Ambulance is a registered charity that runs London’s only helicopter emergency medical service, serving the 10 million people who live, work and commute within the capital's M25 orbital motorway.
