  • Two decorators work on scaffolding on the first floor of an Edwardian period home in south London. Warm light from inside the house contrasts with blue winter light at dusk a few miles south of parliament in Westminster. Other homes are in darkness. It is late one evening in central London, in a suburb known as Herne Hill, SE24 in the borough of Lambeth. We see across the metropolis from quiet and expensive period homes, whose owners would typically be white middle-class, across to the blocks of flats (apartments) in the Loughborough Estate, a far rougher location for street gangs and high crime rates.

  • Late at night, in a gloomy arrivals gate at Chicago O'Hare airport, a young man sits patiently on his own awaiting the arrival of his girlfriend after a holiday in Asia. It is the last flight to land and a helium balloon floats on a string bearing the words 'Welcome Home', a popular gesture for relatives in airports around the world, each having their own cultural way of showing affection for arriving family members after long absences. The balloon stands still, the only colour amid the drab interior of this sprawling airport hub. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903.

Afternoon sunlight pours through a front window into his living room which serves as a shrine to the Sheep. Having already refused a half million Pounds for his house and spectacular view high up on a hill, he prefers to breed his beloved Blackface sheep which he shows only twice a year at local competitions in the Dunvegan area and the prizes and awards are proof of his success. Vic now lives alone rearing his livestock with four sheepdogs for training and company. Image taken for the 'UK at Home' book project published 2008.

  • 72 year old Lilia Malinao's small vegetable shop outside her home in Sitio Matinao, Alamada, Cotabato province, Mindanao Island, The Philippines. Lilia is also President of ‘Women’s Rural Improvement Club’ and has been involved in Oxfam’s BINDS project for 1 year and 8 months. In the Philippines climate change is contributing to an increase in the frequency and intensity of typhoons as well as a general rise in temperatures and rain leading to an increase in droughts, flash floods and landslides. This is having a huge impact on smallholder farmers who depend on one cash crop leaving them vulnerable to any changes in weather patterns. If their crops fail they are left with no other source of income for that year. In central Mindanao Oxfam is working with local partners and governments to increase awareness of climate change in poor communities and reduce the risks it creates to vulnerable farmers by supporting them in crop diversification.
