  • Snow showers are falling in a deserted South London street in Herne Hill, London SE24. Snowflakes are falling in large amounts settling on this road and tyre tracks from vehicles have been left in the snow though many parked cars are becoming covered in the snow fall as they sit at the kerbside. Snowflakes are falling in their thousands, settling on this part of London's inner-city - an unusual event - and the heaviest precipitation for 18 years. It is early morning and still dark and street lights are making the landscape orange before the blue of dawn changes the colour and the atmosphere.

  • A boy plays snowballs at night during heavy snow showers in central London - a rare event for an inner-city. Snowflakes are falling in large amounts settling on this street in Herne Hill, South London. The lad is in his element by going outdoors at night as the showers are falling everywhere about him. He dashes across the picture, running through thousands of snowflakes armed with a snowball destined for his elder sister's head. Relishing the hide and seek game they're playing and the prospect of landing the snow as a direct hit makes him look mischievous and excited.

  • A man of Afro-Caribbean birth, clutches at his scarf to keep out freezing temperatures during a cold snap in south London. Falling snow has settled on the man's black hair and even turned his eyelashes white after his walk from home to a local bus stop from where he is trying to commute to work. Because of skin colour, the white snowflakes make this picture a largely monochrome scene, adding to the bleak sense of wintry conditions. He is clearly unprepared for winter, wearing neither hat nor gloves and looks chilled to the bone thanks to the heat he's losing through his head and upper body. The climate of this part of the northern hemisphere can be ferocious for those ill-equipped or at the very least, unpleasant for those from warmer parts of the world.

  • "Garden ballet." With hands outstretched, a ten month-old infant supports her weight on some garden chairs as she learns to stand on her own two feet. Without the strength in her legs, she loses her balance and her mother stands behind holding her daughter by the waist preventing her from falling over. It is a warm summer afternoon with both mother and child barefoot on the back garden patio and we see the experience of an adult encouraging a developing human being with the confidence to stand erect with back straight. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • "First shoes in Wales." An eleven month-old infant tries to walk in her first pair of proper rigid shoes whilst on holiday in Snowdonia, North Wales UK. Tentatively taking a few unconfident steps the young girl cries out in surprise, almost falling over. Her mother instinctively grabs her coat hood before she topples into into the pebbles and soft mud of a river bed which would soil her clean clothes. We see a mother preventing her daughter from getting dirty and from hurting herself, a fast reaction to stop injury on a small child. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • "Then raindrops fell on my head." Looking over the shoulder as a mother pours bath water from a toy seive on to the head of her five month-old baby daughter. The infant looks unsure but otherwise spellbound as the droplets fall, watching them leaving the pot to feel them trickling down. We see the child's trust for her mother and imagine her fascination with tumbling liquid, the feel of it touching her skin. This water is shallow, a child can drown in an inch of water so the mum is supporting the baby's head around the neck in the correct manner. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. • High above the streets of Old Lisbon, we see a Portuguese lady leaning out of her window to hang out her washing on the line that is attached to her home's exterior wall in the Bairro Alto district - or Upper City - the oldest of Lisbon's residential quarters. Items of underwear, socks and other miscellaneous clothing have been strung out on the line that is now pegged along the crumbling wall's surface with faded, peeling plaster and paint. A TV aerial has also been fixed precariously by the window and it's shadow can be seen in the sunshine which is strong and side-lighting the scene which has a warm, morning glow about it. Lisbon's Bairro Alto quarter is located above Baixa and developed in the 16th Century. Suffering very little damage in the earthquake of 1755, it remains the area of most character and renowned for its residential and working quarter for craftsmen and shopkeepers. • Overgrown tomb and gravestones are covered by ivy undergrowth in Nunhead Cemetery whose deceased occupants were important members of society from the industrial age. On the left is a memorial (‘With loving memory of Charlotte Catherine, the beloved wife ..”) including an angel figure that leans over at an angle, probably caused by tree roots or perhaps by vandalism during the 50s and 60s when this land was left open for youngsters to commit criminal damage to stonework and carvings. During the cemetery’s annual open day, there is an opportunity for the of the cemetery ‘Friends’ (society) to celebrate and educate Londoners, old and young, to help preserve and conserve this historic site.

  • A brave taxi cab driver drives gingerly along Denmark Hill in South London, The capital's infrastructure has largely come to a halt due to the large amounts of snowfall that has hit the capital - the most for 18 years. In addition to the lack of buses, trains were severely affected and roads like this have not been gritted by the local borough council, leaving motorists struggling to control their vehicles is the slippery conditions. The taxi's orange light is still illuminated indicating he is free for hire and a foot of snow is piled on his roof as the headlights pick out the driving blizzard conditions. Footprints are already in the drift near the pavement that is now hidden from the road.

  • "Homo erectus." At the exact moment that a young human being walks for the first time, an eleven month-old girl infant conquers her fear and takes her first tentative upright unaided steps. After months of building lower leg strength by pushing and leaning against household objects, she now leaves the protective hands of a delighted but nervous mother who relishes the joyous moment of her offspring's great achievement. The girl's legs and hips help propel her forward motion, naturally making her an upright bi-pedal species. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • A farm vehicle drives in winter light over the traditional stone bridge built from locally sourced materials over the Allt an Eas River at Eas Falls, near Kilbrennan, Isle of Mull, Scotland. Beneath the bridge is the fast-flowing river that curls downhill, falling steeply into the distant Loch Tuath with the Island of Ulva, the headland beyond. Eas Fors Waterfall is one of the most spectacular waterfalls on the island, situated just off the B8073, a couple of miles North of Ulva Ferry. Eas is Gaelic for waterfall, Fors is Norse for waterfall and the final fall plunges 100 feet over the edge of the cliff to the sea below.

In the late 1990s the site was re-branded as a holiday resort, and remains open today as one of three remaining Butlins resorts.

  • A young boy sits on the lawn after falling from his tricycle on a summer's day in the family garden in the early nineteen sixties. Sitting on his knees on the soft summer grass the young lad looks brave rather than tearful. There is the family tent erected across from the path, its open flaps perhaps drying out after rain or simply as a play den for the boy. The picture was recorded on Kodachrome (Kodak) film in about 1964.
