  • In the heart of the City of London, a caterpillar tracked crane tears down the walls of an old 70s office block close to St Paul's Cathedral, England. As a pedestrian walks past the blue hoardings that protect passers-by like him, the rubble is piled high before being removed as spoil to make way for an brand new construction that appears in an artist's impression picture on the right, above two site engineers wearing fluorescent jackets and hard hats. This is a scene of renewal in London's financial district. Of optimism and regeneration as businesses invest in new workplaces and replacing the tired, old offices that cannot accommodate new computer and server cabling technology.

  • Hopton's Almshouses, Hopton Street, Southwark, London. Tall glass buildings loom behind these historically important houses at Bankside and near to Tate Modern. Founded by Robert Hopton, fishmonger in 1730. Properties built around a garden in 1752 and are still in use. Before the days of state provision for the old, infirm or poor it was common for wealthy individuals to bequeath money or property to the local parish or to set up independent institutions to assist those in need locally. Many ancient parishes have such institutions and many almshouses still survive. However it is unusual to find one founded as early as 1752 still in its original form, carrying out its original function, so close to London.Hopton's Almshouses were founded from a trust set up by the will of Charles Hopton and provided accommodation for 26 residents, financial grants and fuel.

  • Lit by early sun that filters through mountain peaks to this remote village near Ulleri, in the Himalayan foothills, Nepal, we see the veranda of a tea shop that serves weary travellers trekking the Annapurna Circuit and traditional doko basket. Villages such as these partly-depend on the agriculture of rice-growing and also on the passing tourist trade. Western trekkers walk through these tiny communities on their way up the series of climbing trails of the Annapurna Conservation Sanctuary, a sometimes gruelling walk from the low hills of Pokhara to the higher altitudes of Annapurna, the (26,000 feet (8,000 metre) peak - and beyond. Tea houses are dotted along the trail offering lodging, refreshments and basic, but delicious food to the weary traveller and the landscapes are often shared with local livestock.

  • VW van parked opposite redundant farm buildings near Clarksdale. If you want to explore Clarksdale and the Blues country in true retro fashion the best place to do so is by staying at the Shack Up Inn. In The Promised Land: The Great Black Migration and How It Changed America, author Nicholas Lemman describes how, on Oct. 2, 1944, a crowd of 3,000 people quietly watched the first public demonstration of the mechanical cotton picker at Hopson's plantation in Clarksdale. At best, wrote Lemman, a skilled field hand could pick 20 pounds of cotton in an hour; the mechanical picker picked 1,000 pounds. Hopson calculated that a bale of cotton (500 pounds) cost $39.41 to pick by hand and $5.26 by machine. It wasn't too hard to foresee the future. Hopson was the first plantation to convert completely to the mechanical cotton pickers. Soon afterward, the sharecropper shacks where the plantation's workers had lived were abandoned and then torn down. But now they're back at the Shack Up Inn, Mississippi's oldest B&B -- and that's bed and beer, y'all. "We don't fool around with any fixing of breakfasts," said Bill Talbot, part owner of the inn.

When the budget doesn’t run to a fabulous hotel you can always plump for rough and ready and possibly film noir at the thousands of bargain priced motels around the states. One can normally get clean sheets and a comfortable bed for the night but if not it all adds to the classic road trip experience.

  • High in the Nepali Himalayan foothills, travellers may be greeted by the welcoming relief of a group of mountain inns and hotels offering lodging to weary legs after many hours walking uphill in this gruelling landscape. Communities here partly-depend on the agriculture of rice-growing but also on the passing tourist trade. Western trekkers from all over the world walk through these tiny communities on their way up the series of climbing trails of the Annapurna Conservation Sanctuary circuit, a sometimes rigorous walk from the low hills of Pokhara to the higher altitudes of Annapurna, the (26,000 feet (8,000 metre) peak. To be greeted by so much choice is the most rewarding experience and the offer of hot showers is about the best reward for so much exertion.

  • During a time-exposure of a few seconds, the ambient neon and natural evening light of Miami Beach's Ocean Drive are mixed together to give an atmospheric mood of vitality, bustle and excitement in this tropical city. The vertical-aligned name of the famous Colony Hotel is seen through the darkened window of an SUV (4x4). Glowing pinks and blues are vivid in this scene where beautiful people and expensive cars cruise along slowly, each parading bodywork and personality. Palm trees sway about in the coastal breeze, blurring during the exposure and making them ghostly against the fading sky of early evening. This is vibrant district of Miami, Florida. The place to hang-out and be noticed.
