  • At the famous Butlins holiday camp in the Somerset town of Minehead, a poolside lifeguard overlooks the main pool from an overhead bridge. Behind him a monorail transports holidaymakers around the resort. Wearing the large letter B for Butlins on his red vest, the young lad sucks on his whistle held between his lips and prominently, the words 'Made in England' have been tattooed on his left shoulder - as if a statement for his patriotic ideals but also for those of Butlins - an institution for the British working classes who after the war had the opportunity to spend their summers at special resorts in seaside towns that provided entertainment and fun. Butlins and other camp businesses went into decline when the masses preferred Spanish vacations but have since been revived as travel costs have again soared and holidays at home are once again popular.

  • A young man whistles to a tune that he is listening to through headphones. It is 1989 and the Walkman is the toy of choice for the urban young - the first portable music device that helped change the way society took their taped music out and about - and years before the Apple iPod. It worked but one had to press the foam pads into the ears to drown out background city noise plus the cassette tape often snagged and twisted, ruining the product.

  • Monument to the famous Victorian bare-knuckle boxer, Thomas Sayers with a life sized statue of his much-loved dog Lion, keeping guard over his masters grave in Highgate Cemetery, , 25th May, 2005, Highgate Cemetery, London, United Kingdom. The funeral of Thomas Sayers, the last of the bare-knuckle prizefighters, was sure to attract crowds. He had been hugely popular in his lifetime, having vanquished many a more formidable-looking opponent in a career lasting over ten years. The dog, with a band of crape around his neck, behaved impeccably. Not so the other spectators at the cemetery, who danced and screamed, yelled and hooted, whistled and shrieked, like demons.... As many as 10,000 turned up for the burial, rushing ahead to the top of the hill where it was to take place, swarming into the trees for the view.
