  • Using a tabloid newspaper, a father seeks shelter from sunshine while sitting in a council deck chair. On the front page of the paper is a headline saying "Butchered' showing a picture of an unfortunate young 3 year-old boy murdered by a maniac axeman. Close-by is the man's own son who is digging a hole furiously in the sand. He looks uncannily like a slightly older version of the murdered boy. This coincidence is heightened because of the body-language of the digging lad, seemingly about to chop an unseen object with his red spade. Both man and boy are on holiday at the northern English seaside resort of Scarborough, North Yorkshire and they are otherwise having a great time on South Beach, near the Grand Hotel building, high up on the cliff.

  • A female passenger leans forward with head in hands amid the busy terminal at Chicago O'Hare Airport, Illinois, USA. Fellow-travellers in the background appear unworried, waiting for their respective flights in a calm manner. The lady in the foreground's body language however, suggests fatigue and distress and perhaps a fear of flying. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903.

  • Two young men dressed in office suits casually stuff their lunches during a hot lunchtime break in the Broadgate Estate in the City of London. Both with legs across knees, the lads in their 20s sit on a bench beneath a tree alongside the statue of a traditional gardener, slightly bent and equipped with hoe and wearing a wastecoat, hobnailed boots and flat cap, an iconic salt-of-the-earth workman. This scene suggests the social divisions of the working man: Of the young, educated post-war generation whose opportunities have afforded them a faster lifestyle, far removed from that of the physically-exhausted man whose life has been spent working the honest land. The English social divide is clearly represented here as the harshness of the manual labourer versus the youth of today, seen in the middle of the modern city.

  • A young trader in currencies leans back in his chair on the currency trading floor of Barclays Bank in the City of London, England, UK. Easing back during the stress of a day when the money markets have been volatile, this young man has the responsibilities of millions of Pounds Sterling to trade and value. He has old technology at his disposal, in the decade when technology made a big impression on the workplace but before the arrival of the internet and e-mail. Communication was therefore slow and unreliable although banks like Barclays who traded money across the world were skilled in migrating information across time-zones.

  • In the shadow of 1 Canada Square, the iconic Canary Wharf tower in London's Docklands stands as an icon for Thatcherite Britain when the good times, prosperity and economic upturns seemed unshakeable. Four work colleagues stand under a hot lunchtime sun during a summer heatwave. In their shirtsleeves the men each hold pints of refreshing lager, all having removed their dark jackets to enjoy the company of a flirtatious female who appears to be flirting with an older male companion. The sky is blue and the five are care-free to any future economic uncertainty.

  • Two party girls are dancing with a male friend who is apparently flirting with the girl holding a packet of cigarettes and an unlit cigarette on the far left. Their body language suggests they know each other. The lady in the middle has red hair and lips and has her eyes closed and is holding a bottle of Hooch, an alcoholic drink. The party venue is dark and chaotic and the atmosphere is energetic and lively at a club venue called Adrenaline Village in Battersea, South London.

  • A model from the Alion Couture fashion house takes part in a street parade with horses for the benefit of the media in Kensington, central London UK. We see the lower section of a horse ramp and another horse is in the background. Seen from a low angle, both the horses hoof and her foot in red high heel shoes appear to be askew in a postural echo, when two mannerisms or body language are similar. The light is blue because of the shadow both subjects are in but her shoes and matching short red dress appear vibrant in saturation and hue.

  • Wearing beachwear and topless in shorts are the beautiful people of Los Angeles’ famous Venice Beach. A dashing athletic male specimen, all six-pack muscles, a dark tan with white trainers, socks and leaning on a bike, flirts with a young woman whose perfect body is facing away from us, allowing us a peek at her bottom and long, slender legs and rollerblades. She wears a very small pink bikini and a tiny back-pack in the west coast sunshine. There is sexuality and machismo here between the sexes where exhibitionists and extroverts display their confidence and talents, the guy’s body language showing and facial expression giving off a keen interest in this woman’s female form.

  • The coincidental relationship between a direct marketing company poster and a man checking messages outside in the rain on a central london street. While the man on the poster seemingly enjoys the thrill of receiving a package we also see an outsider on a rainy pavement also looking down, this time at his smartphone. It is a scene of repetition and similarities of posture and body language.

  • Mural by the artist known as Stik, painted on a wall at Push Studios, Blackwater Street, East Dulwich. Stik people, although androgenous and constructed from simple shapes, are nevertheless capable of conveying complex body language and emotion. These themes of human emotion and expression are infused in Stik’s brightly coloured street art. Stik, the street artist, himself was homeless for a period and ideas surrounding human vulnerability are also detectable in his art. Stik has been creating Stik people around London for over ten years
