  • Once the wartime armed forces sweetheart, Dame Vera Lynn makes an appearance near a replica Spitfire fighter plane at the 70th anniversary of WW2 Battle of Britain. Seventy years ago, Winston Churchill made one of his most stirring speeches in Parliament to praise the Battle of Britain aircrews who had fought off the threat of Nazi invasion during the summer of 1940. In the 1940s, Dame Vera's personality warmed those fighting abroad, her voice singing some of the most stirring ballads that allied soldiers, sailors and airmen heard to remind them of home. Here she stands beneath the full-size model of the Merlin-powered propeller of this iconic fighter that helped stop a full-scale Nazi invasion of the British Isles.

  • The field of stelae of the outdoor Holocaust Memorial, a reminder of Jewish persecution and anti-Semitism in Europe during the second world war. U.S. architect Peter Eisenman's controversial design was chosen as a fitting tribute to the Jews that died before and during World War II as part of Hitler's plan to exterminate them. Eisenman's design is quite unique and has drawn both praise and criticism. Occupying about 205,000 square feet (19,000 square meters) of space near the Brandenburg Gate and just a short distance from where the ruins of Hitler's bunker is buried, the Berlin Holocaust Memorial is made up of 2,711 gray stone slabs that bear no markings, such as names or dates. It is estimated that the Nazis used these camps to kill an estimated 11 million people.

The man has driven from his mid-west home to offer help at the hazardous Ground Zero where for the past 4 days and nights he has been uncovering debris and human remains after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. Exhausted and emotional, he was sent away for his own and the safety of others and alcohol was his first purchase. New Yorkers praised their heroes for assisting their city (and America) in their hour of need but here, passers-by stepped over him complaining of his drunken state. The now lonely man is distressed, tormented and psychologically fragile but gets no help. With his few possessions, his hard hat and flag, mask and cans of Budweiser we see a man at his lowest ebb.

Sylvie Selde remembers "The entire group of singers practising were killed. We are still recovering the bodies now, only nine so far. When we recover them we take them to the mass grave or dig a hole and put them in. This is a message from God, a judgement, do the right thing. Stop being wicked". Many believe that in Port Au Prince one Haitian Alex K Juste is more positive "That day, there was no rich, no poor, no colour, no prejudice, no racism. We were equal, they knew that God existed and their hands were up in the air praising the Lord. We held hands, we cared for each other, we supported the sick. What a beautiful thing to see us Haitians reunited, together as one".
