The people are either confidently pacing forward, standing still to seek guidance or simply spontaneously emerging from the shadows to a brighter future, a moment when freedom of choice is offered and the road ahead dictates their fate. It is a scene of corporate theate and each employee will attend this fair where pep-talks from executives, outside speakers and motivational gurus talk to large groups of E & Y personnel so their presence on this day away from the office is vital for the year's business ahead.

  • A couple riding on rented mobility scooters in the grounds of the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. With identifying codes on the rear of each vehicle, the couple make their way to another art installation and although on an internal roadway, keeping to the left, as if on a European road. In one mirror of the nearest scooter, we see the occupant's face, an elderly lady with white hair and glasses. In the distance is her husband who has raced ahead into the shadows.

  • Police tape and a makeshift sign warn of a lane closure due to flooding in the village of Lavant, West Sussex. Afternoon sunshine illuminates the roughly-made board with red painted letters which says 'Road Closed'. The rippling water is less than a foot deep and we can see the broken white centre line beneath the surface but the linked posts that border the village green are also submerged. Even so, traffic is prohibited from passing through there for the risk of grounding or damaging engines. Lavant is a village just north of the city of Chichester. It is made up of two parts, Mid Lavant and East Lavant, and takes its name from the River Lavant which flows from East Dean. This area has been prone to flooding for several years and houses around the rising rivers can be blighted with insurance companies refusing future cover.

  • After heavy rain and the subsequent flooding, two lone canoeists paddle down the centre of the A27 near Chichester, West Sussex. The Dual carriageway has been completely submerged to approximately 1.5 metres and only the road sign with its directional arrow is visible above the surface which is rippling in a faint breeze. The men in red and yellow kayaks look inexperienced in boating activities and their clothing is not suitable for water sports. Even so, they are speeding down the highway that is otherwise empty of all other vehicles and they have the water and space to themselves without the fear of collision.

  • The A30 highway runs deep into the South-West of England - from Exeter in the county of Devon to Penzance in the narrow peninsular of Cornwall. On certain dates in the calendar routes like this, near the Cornish town of Bodmin, England, come to a standstill from the huge volume of cars and private vehicles, all heading down to costal resorts and better weather. We see here a huge tailback of traffic that is queueing along one side of the British dual-carriageway (two lanes in each direction) from close-up to the distance down and up a natural hill in this undulating landscape. The cars have edged forward are nose to tail for hours in summer heatwave and tempers fray, children arguing in the back and an otherwise relaxed holiday mood suddenly goes bad.

  • An Opening Soon sign announces a future new business. Written in prominent blue letters whose shadows that duplicates the message on a white sheet hiding the obscured window. The new shop will offer new jobs to local employees, a workforce anticipating a return to prosperity, a symbol of recovering economic growth.

  • Making their way across a snow-swept road in Norwood, south London, an elderly couple tread warily as the snow turns to slush. It's a bleak, raw morning as the new snowfall has settled on this suburban street where cars are parked on icy kerbs. Wearing sensible hats and coats and non-slip boots the pensioners are vulnerable to icy black spots which may endanger their stability because old people are susceptible to falls and injury at these hazardous times. A very monochrome landscape, we see little colour. Instead it is a scene of jeopardy and of an uncaring society for its older generations.

  • Moving fast past a farmhouse building on a busy UK A road, unseen traffic leaves its light trails on an otherwise dark winter night near the giant DIRFT warehouse logistics park in Daventry, Northamptonshire England. Some rooms are lit in this remote residence which show signs of occupation. Red tail lights from cars, lorries and trucks streak by with tall traces of container traffic leaves light on the picture, diagonally leaving their mark. It is a very busy highway on which to own a home but this infrastructure is a vital route that keeps Britain's logistics moving across the country 24/7.

  • Pointing towards the viewer and the bottom of the picture near empty parking bay markings, a stencilled arrow directs traffic flow at the DIRFT warehouse logistics park in Daventry, Northamptonshire England. Bright light glows from the warehouse walls shining on to the car park creating an almost daylight landscape. This 365 acre site off Junction 18 of the M1 motorway is a hub for road, rail and service infrastructure, some 2.3m sq.ft. of distribution and manufacturing floorspace had been constructed by 2004 and occupiers including Tesco’s, Tibbett & Britten plc, Ingram Micro, Royal Mail, the W.H. • Two pedestrians walk beneath a motorists' Congestion Zone sign on a London street. Seen from the top deck of a bus, we see from an aerial perspective the two men passing each other beneath the taller blue sign which line the capital’s congestion zone, a traffic charging area ringing inner London, the boundary of the zone introduced in February 2007 to ease vehicle numbers and pollution and generate extra revenue for transport issues. The bright blue sign tells us that 2 miles down the road, the charge comes into effect from 7am to 6pm, weekdays.

  • Exterior of the Barclays Bank branch and outside roadworks in Moorgate, City of London. A scooter rider and his passenger stop at a red light in an area designated for cyclists but they are stationary before continuing their journey. A branch of Barlcays Bank is in the background with disruptive roadworks fencing by mound of soil. Barlays sponsor the the so-called Boris Bikes that can be rented across the capital and an ad for that service can be seen on the bank's wall.

  • A husband and wife make their way along a pavement towards the entrance of the Ascot racecourse where the annual Ladies' Day event is held as part of the English social season calendar. Leading the way and carrying two walking sticks and in a polythene bag, his best jacket for the dress-code is important if one is allowed access to the private enclosures. He wears a top hat and waste coat as he hobbles along with wife in tow. She is behind him rummaging through her handbag perhaps looking for tickets or cash. Royal Ascot is held every June and is one of the main dates on the sporting calendar and social season.

  • A fisherman from the Maldives sits making a call on his mobile cell phone on the bow of a dhoni boat which heads along on a calm Indian Ocean. After a hard day's fishing he gazes forward to open sea where an almost uninterrupted view of sea and horizon is seen beyond except for a small island is faintly in view. Even small remote atoll communites in the Maldives have strong phone signals and many also have good Wi-Fi connections. He and his crew have been catching Yellow Fin Tuna in the seas north of the capital Male in this Islamic Republic. Their catch is for export to the EU and in particular, the UK's supermarkets. There is no limit and no obvious destination, just infinity and the thought of tomorrow.

  • A fisherman from the Maldives clubs to death a yellow fin tuna on the deck of a dhoni boat in the Indian Ocean. Using a handmade instrument of death, carved from beach flotsam, the man raises his hands to again bring the club down on the dying fish whose skull has already been smashed by repeated blows. Next it will be gutted efficiently with sharp knives and immediately plunged into ice containers to cool the flesh, reducing the risk of self-deteriorating flushed blood which renders it unfit for consumption under EU law (its live internal core temperature is 40 degrees centigrade). When as many fish have been caught before dark using hand and line method, rather than nets, the boat presses on to the processing factory at Himmafushi where they're filleted and boxed for export to Europe and in particular, for UK supermarkets like Sainsbury's.

  • A young commuter woman awaits her bus on a southbound route at a stop on Charing Cross Road in central London. Surrounded by red hues from the bus behind the girl and from lettering from an Angus Steakhouse restaurant, the female is also in a red coat on this November night. She is of Chinese ancestry, a Sino-British family moved to the UK whose spiritual home is nearby Chinatown, across the road. She looks wistful, deep in thought about her homeward journey, while surrounded by the bustle of the capital.

  • As a bus driver is about to close the front doors of his vehicle, two commuters face each other on Charing Cross Road in central London. It is getting dark on this winter afternoon and the number 24 red bus is on a regular southerly route through their heart of Theatreland in the West End. The two homeward people are talking to each other, discussing the merits of taking one bus service over another to get home.

  • On the eve of transfer of law in Hong Kong from the UK to China, construction workers in Central Hong Kong carry on their tasks during a monsoonal rain shower on the last day of British rule. Some are dressed in yellow waterproof coats and hard hats, we see a British-style sign warning drivers of Men at Work resembling a man holding an umbrella. Lastly, on the right another man on a wall, also holding an brolley. In the foreground a car park sign states that the space is full in red letters and a local authority sign saying "Working for a better environment" is written in Chinese and English lettering. The transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to China, referred to as "The Handover" occurred at midnight on June 30, 1997, signifying the end of British rule, and the transfer of legal and financial authority back to China.
