  • Bride arrives for her wedding in a vintage Rolls Royce, making her entrance via the 'Goods entrance' at the Connaught Rooms in central London, UK. For such a well to do wedding this dirty back street, which is normally used as a 'smokers corner' provides a huge contract to the bride in her white satin dress and guests in their expensive dresses. They all seemed very happy to be arriving through the back door though, as the atmosphere was one of laughter and smiles.

  • Two young ‘Scouse' girls sit on a telephone junction box and against a brick wall on which there is graffiti and childish scribbles. They are near a back alleyway between poor terraced housing in Liverpool, England. The older, taller girl is of Asian-descent and the younger is White British who hides her face with her top. Both are facing other activity in this inner-city street where there are 'back to back' houses in a poor area, South of the city centre and home to deprived families. Few of these back-to-backs exist after being cleared to allow construction of high-rise tower-blocks and flats.

  • A rather obese woman stands in the waves at the seaside resort of Great Yarmouth in Norfolk. With hands behind her back and fingers interlocked the lady wears a turquoise bathing costume that just about fits her ample, wide body. Her bottom is large as are her legs that have cellulite on the tops of her thighs. She looks left alone, a solitary person standing with her back to the viewer - or perhaps she is standing guard, keeping watch on children as they play safely in the sea. Water splashes against her lower legs and is frozen still by a fast shutter speed. It is a fine, bright sunny afternoon on this Eastern coast of England, more noted for very changeable weather rather than the heatwave experienced here.

  • Seen from a low angle, we see a big sister turning around to see what her younger brother is up to as they sit back-to-back in a park in London, England. The boy is actually playing with the girl's toy windmill, turning its sails proving a fun way of passing part of a summer's afternoon in this inner-city park. His sister is unimpressed however and she is about to snatch her own property back - not because she needs it, but simply because it is hers. These siblings are having to learn sharing each other's things and as a five and three year-old are finding out, it's a hard lesson. From a personal documentary project entitled "Next of Kin" about the photographer's two children's early years spent in parallel universes. Model released.

  • During the Liverpool binmens strike of 1991, litter and refuse bags collect in the back alleyway of back-to-back terraced houses, on 14th June 1991, in Liverpool, England. Surrounded by black bin-bags during the Merseyside dustmans strike of 1991, two young Scouse girls lean against a brick wall in a rear alleyway between poor terraced housing in Liverpool, England. The industrial action against the local authority was a health problem for Liverpool over that summer when streets filled with rubbish. Vermin like rats ran around and public city parks filled with every kind of refuse and garbage. Few of these back-to-backs existed in the 1990s after being cleared to allow construction of high-rise tower-blocks and flats.

  • The message in graffiti lettering "Don't come here they attack you" has been written on a wall outside a house in the Toxteth area of Liverpool, Merseyside England. Flat 1A has a bright red-painted door and red bricks in an otherwise poverty-stricken district of this poor inner-city where crime and social deprivation has become the normal way of life for Scouses (someone from Liverpool). We see the red theme carried throughout this image of threat and ill-discipline where survival is clearly hard. These 'back to back' terraced houses have largely been demolished during Liverpool's regeneration during the 60s and 70s though some remain, accommodating unfortunate families on low-income.

Looking exhausted, with red eyes, a drawn complexion and a grey/white beard, Waite is otherwise delighted to be back on home soil after years of captivity. As an envoy for the Church of England, he travelled to Lebanon to try to secure the release of four hostages including journalist John McCarthy and was himself held captive by Islamic factions for 1,763 days, the first four years of which were spent in total solitary confinement, between 1987 and 1991.

  • "Puddle in Oxleas Wood." A six month-old infant looks out from a baby back carrier frame whilst out on a muddy winter jaunt in Oxleas Wood on Shooters Hill, South London. The girl peers out with a fascination for the outdoors from a warm coat wearing a tiny hat and loose-fitting gloves to view the world while perched high-up on her mother's back who carries her child on the chilly walk. The bare trees and forested landscape can be imagined from the waterlogged puddle that is out of focus to the right. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • A red London bus is passing between sunlight and shadow as passengers sit patiently in heavy traffic on Piccadilly in Central London. At the back of the vehicle, a man is leaping on to the back to board via the entrance and exit, a characteristic of these old, classic modes of London transport. These buses are being fazed out in favour of more modern, cleaner fuel-burning vehicles where passengers can mount and dismount safer as many passengers injured themselves. The bus is a traditional design called a Routemaster which has been in service on the capital's roads since 1954 and is nowadays only seen on heritage and tourist routes. From any angle, the bus is easily recognisable as that classic British transport icon.

In the departures concourse the mum and her child await their check-in zone to open in this international aviation hub in West London. The infant sleeps soundly, wrapped to its mother's back in the traditional manner for carrying children in the developing world. It is a simple scene of everyday care for one's child and airport operator spent £4.3 billion on Terminal 5 which has the capacity to serve around 30 million passengers a year. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009).

  • A baby girl is crawling on all-fours along her parents' pavement, in a suburban London back garden. Her body weight is spread on two legs and one arm while she moves along confidently, placing her other hand on the warm surface, one summer day. The infant is a approximately 10 months and is gaining strength from her legs which will soon be strong enough to stand and eventually walk. The summer sun is on her back and the shadow of garden chair furniture is on the path alongside her. She has a contented expression on her face as if her little adventure in a big outside, wider world is for her to explore.

  • High in the Nepali Himalayan foothills, an elderly woman is carried downhill by a relative for medical attention. On this mountain path that continues downhill to the nearest village, beyond which there is a road and transport to the nearest hospital, two men accompany the elder family member with overnight possessions. The old lady sits on a makeshift carrying chair that fits on to the back of a man who stoops under the weight of his human load. • Two young Lao boys riding on the back of a female Asian elephant carrying chains at Sayaboury elephant festival, Sayaboury province, Lao PDR. Originally created by ElefantAsia in 2007, the 3-day elephant festival takes place in February in the province of Sayaboury with over 80,000 local and international people coming together to experience the grand procession of decorated elephants. It is now organised by the provincial government of Sayaboury. The Elephant Festival is designed to draw the public's attention to the condition of the endangered elephant, whilst acknowledging and celebrating the ancestral tradition of elephant domestication and the way of life chosen by the mahout. Laos was once known as the land of a million elephants but now there are fewer than 900 living in the country. Around 470 of them are in captivity, traditionally employed by a lucrative logging industry. Elephants are trained and worked by a mahout (handler) whose relationship to the animal is often described as a marriage and can last a lifetime. But captive elephants are often overworked and exhausted and as a consequence no longer breed. With only two elephants born for every ten that die, the Asian elephant, the sacred national emblem of Laos, is under serious threat of extinction.

Tourists walking along any part of Luxor are pestered by Calesh owners who follow the visitor until they climb aboard. They are dependent of tourist traffic and therefore victims of the downturn. According to the country's Ministry of Tourism, European visitors to Egypt is down by up to 80% in 2016 from the suspension of flights after the downing of the Russian airliner in Oct 2015. Despite the efforts of local animal charities, and although the position has improved in recent years and is still improving, few of the horses appear to be well looked after. The drivers tend to gallop the horses and use their whips unnecessarily and rarely do you see a horse in the shade or drinking.

  • Bus rear advertising Abba's West End musical Mamma Mia as it drives past a city boundary griffin. This marks one of the eastern boundaries of the City of London. The City is a separate, geographically-small City within Greater London, England. The City of London is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. The City of London is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area. London Bridge's history stretches back to the first crossing over Roman Londinium, close to this site and subsequent wooden and stone bridges have helped modern London become a financial success.

  • With al fresco customers sitting at cafe tables on the street a driver checks the delivery of toilet rolls and piles them up on the pavement, having taken them out from the back of his van in Soho, central London. Checking the customer's order, the driver stands with his piles of items driven into the capital from a warehouse somewhere. More boxes are piled high and strewn around the vehicle as the transported goods make their way to various locations around the capital. It seems to be an inappropriate place to offload, given the customers' proximity to the toilet rolls.

  • VW van parked opposite redundant farm buildings near Clarksdale. If you want to explore Clarksdale and the Blues country in true retro fashion the best place to do so is by staying at the Shack Up Inn. In The Promised Land: The Great Black Migration and How It Changed America, author Nicholas Lemman describes how, on Oct. 2, 1944, a crowd of 3,000 people quietly watched the first public demonstration of the mechanical cotton picker at Hopson's plantation in Clarksdale. At best, wrote Lemman, a skilled field hand could pick 20 pounds of cotton in an hour; the mechanical picker picked 1,000 pounds. Hopson calculated that a bale of cotton (500 pounds) cost $39.41 to pick by hand and $5.26 by machine. It wasn't too hard to foresee the future. Hopson was the first plantation to convert completely to the mechanical cotton pickers. Soon afterward, the sharecropper shacks where the plantation's workers had lived were abandoned and then torn down. But now they're back at the Shack Up Inn, Mississippi's oldest B&B -- and that's bed and beer, y'all. "We don't fool around with any fixing of breakfasts," said Bill Talbot, part owner of the inn.

  • A close up of hemp fabric on a loom showing the warp and weft threads in the Hmong village of Ban Long Kuang, Houaphan province, Lao PDR. Hmong weavers in Houaphan province use a back strap loom where the tension of the warp is controlled by the weaver wearing a strap around their waist. Making hemp fabric is a long and laborious process; the end result is a strong durable cloth with qualities similar to linen which the Hmong women use to make their traditional clothing. In Lao PDR, hemp is now only cultivated in remote mountainous areas of the north.

  • A woman with blue painted nails holds on tight to her partner in a public street. The amourous couple squeeze each other, hugging in a gesture of fond farewell or a happy hello. Either way, we see the lady's hands spread across the back of her friend or partner, comforted and comfortable - or in a desperate bid not to let go. Their relationship is close and intimate, their support of each other, proof of their dependency.

  • A young boy looks over his shoulder by a construction hoarding, a night time panorama of the Thames south bank, featuring the HQ of the intelligence service (MI6) across the river in Vauxhall. Under the gaze of a CCTV camera, the lad glances back as his father leads him towards a local station. The temporary hoarding will stay in place for the time that the company's new residential riverfront apartments are under construction. In the image, the building at Vauxhall Cross, is located at 85 Albert Embankment beside Vauxhall Bridge. It is known within the intelligence community as "Legoland" and "Babylon-on-Thames".

  • A workman's back with discarded bananas and drinks can on a construction skip with antique gallery art on a hoarding. Turned away from us, the man checks messages outside the antiques dealer that is currently being refurbished before its opening in May 2014. On the hoarding is the image of a silver jumping deer that represents in some way, the gallery called Kallos. Kallos is just one among several new antiquities galleries currently under construction in the city’s art market heartland of Mayfair and St James’s. Kallos is the business of entrepreneur and collector Lorne Thyssen, more properly Baron Thyssen-Bornemisza de Kászon, an heir to one of Europe’s biggest industrial fortunes.

  • A local man carries electric cabling uphill on the Annapurna Sanctuary trekking route in central Nepal. With few roads that can transport supplies and raw materials up to remote foothill communities, the only way is often to carry what one needs on the back or by yak. The paths are even but often very steep in places so stamina and endurance are needed to get even modest weights uphill. Nepalis up here often want newer technology and basic electricity to power lights and showers although solar power is another answer.

  • A local man carries tourism industry supplies downhill on the Annapurna Sanctuary trekking route in central Nepal. With the heavy load on his back, supported in the traditional Himalayan manner of a head strap that steadies the pack, the man makes his steady way down the foothill using a long pole for extra balance. Communities here partly-depend on the agriculture of rice-growing but also on the passing tourist trade. Western trekkers from all over the world walk through these tiny communities on their way up the series of climbing trails of the Annapurna Conservation Sanctuary circuit, a sometimes rigorous walk from the low hills of Pokhara to the higher altitudes of Annapurna, the (26,000 feet (8,000 metre) peak. To be greeted by so much choice is the most rewarding experience and the offer of hot showers is about the best reward for so much exertion.

  • A young boy of about 5 years-old sits in the family back garden in the early 1960s. The small lad sits with an embarrassed expression on his face, a brick wall behind him with summer garden plants growing nearby. The boy has blonde hair and a striped t-shirt and was recorded on a film camera by the boy's father, an amateur photographer in 1964. The picture shows us a memory of nostalgia in an era from the last century.

  • Ageing, elderly parents sunbathe with a teenage daughter as the father oddly faces a brick wall while sat in his wheelchair. Looking bored with the family holiday, the young lady of about 18 years of age, sits on a concrete block, the highlight of a vacation at home in Britain, rather than a package trip in mainland Europe. The father has a tanned back but sits facing the brick wall in an eccentric, odd way of sunbathing. He is obviously disabled and can’t reach a beach via steps and perhaps this is why they have opted for this rather desolate corner of the seaside town resort.

  • A masseuse pushes the sore back of a street patient during the demonstration of an Anma acupressure treatment in a central London street. Anma is Japanese for 'press and rub'. Matching the stance of the practitioner wearing a blue tunic who puts his weight forward into the pressure point of the lumbar area, a young mother holds on to the pushchair of her young child. There are many different methods in Anma, including massage, acupressure, stretching But it is important to note that there are many different versions of anma. Many massage therapists in the west have adapted this old technique to work with their more modern methods. Most common is the stretching, pulling, and pulling of affected areas. This is done to try and achieve the release of muscle tension that in return will help to encourage the proper blood flow and lymph flow.
