  • Sprayed writing on a closed recession business window. The words 'Last Day Closing .. any reasonable offers'. Around a recession-bled Britain, high-street businesses have been going bust in their thousands. Britain has now endured eight recessions since the Second World War. No two recessions are alike, and that applies to the current slowdown also. It has been caused by a shock to the availability of credit, a massive build up of debt. The number of people out of work currently stands at almost two million. Given the rate at which the economy is deteriorating this could easily be above three million. From a continuing piece of work about windows and urban messages, the picture is from the project of closed business windows: 'Bust - the Art of Recession'.

  • The words 'Closing Party' are almost obscured by fly-posters on a closed shop window, the victim of the economic recession. Only the remnants of the poster glue have left the traces of sheets of paper on the window, making for an almost abstract landscape of urban decay. Few clues remain of the shop's former business model though it might be assumed it was once a cafe as we see many chairs at a table. From a continuing piece of work about windows and urban messages, the picture is from the project of closed business windows: 'Bust - the Art of Recession'.

  • As if about to be crunched underfoot, shattered glass from the windows of offices in the historic City of London side-street, stickers and notices for Access (Mastercard) and American Express (Amex) credit cards lie on the disaster-strewn pavement (sidewalk). This is some of the debris lying about after the huge Bishopsgate bomb on 24th April 1993, London's most expensive terrorist atrocity during the Provisional Irish Republican Army's (IRA) sustained bombings on the British mainland. Buildings up to 500 metres away were damaged, with one and a half million square feet (140,000 sq m) of office space being affected and over 500 tonnes of glass broken. Costs of repairing the damage was estimated at £350 million and was possibly the IRA's most successful military tactic since the start of what was called the Troubles from 1969 onwards.

Their web site says: "Rio Beach sells men's clothing for the beach and beyond. As one of the only places that stocks fashionable swimming trunks year round, this is a useful place if you're planning an unseasonable holiday."

  • Hours before a European Space Agency Ariane 5 rocket launch, a computer monitor displays cryogenic data at the CDL3 launch centre at ESA's Space Centre at Kourou, French Guiana. It shows the status of liquid oxygen and liquid hydrogen propellant systems within a Vulcain engine. Stored in the launcher tanks and fed to the engine, they react chemically and expand in the engine combustion chamber then forced through the nozzle to provide the thrust that propels the vehicle into orbit. Cryogenic engines utilise propellants that are liquid under cryogenic conditions, at a temperature much lower than normal ambient conditions (-251°C for hydrogen and -184°C for oxygen). The advantage of cryogenic propellants is that they provide the highest thrust performance.

  • An unidentified father in the act of pouring coffee from a cafetiere into two metallic silver mugs in while holding his sleeping baby son in his London kitchen. The unconscious child is a few months old and the parent stands expertly holding both hot liquid and infant as if juggling pleasure and parenthood simultaneously. The sleeping child is limp in the father's arm and is dressed in the same scarlet red as the vibrant colour on the wall behind. We only see the man's upper-legs and torso but the baby is tiny against his body making the scale of both young and old. otherwise, the generic room is bare of decoration or possessions - only a drying cloth and chopping board is seen on the draining board, near plain white tiles.

  • "Then raindrops fell on my head." Looking over the shoulder as a mother pours bath water from a toy seive on to the head of her five month-old baby daughter. The infant looks unsure but otherwise spellbound as the droplets fall, watching them leaving the pot to feel them trickling down. We see the child's trust for her mother and imagine her fascination with tumbling liquid, the feel of it touching her skin. This water is shallow, a child can drown in an inch of water so the mum is supporting the baby's head around the neck in the correct manner. This is from a documentary series of pictures about the first year of the photographer's first child Ella. Accompanied by personal reflections and references from various nursery rhymes, this work describes his wife Lynda's journey from expectant to actual motherhood and for Ella - from new-born to one year-old.

  • As the community fill up their water butts and buckets, a young girl drinks fresh water from a cup supplied by a water tanker, provided by Thames Water during the southern England drought of 1989. During the heatwave that saw reservoirs depleted and in the south west, dry up altogether. A hosepipe ban and in some areas, tap water failed too so tankers stationed in affected areas so locals could fill up for essential use. Tourism increased as people visited tourist areas e.g. beaches at the weekends and took holidays in the UK rather than travelling abroad for the sun
