  • The legs of a young girl appear on an ad billboard, echoing two of the chimneys of Battersea Power Station. It is early morning in this part of south London that is soon to be redeveloped to accommodate the New US Embassy at Nine Elms. But here we see the kids’ fashion advertisement juxtaposed with the post-industrial structure that has been a famous London landmark since the 1930s. Battersea was once a coal-fired power station providing the well known, four chimney layout. The station was decommissioned from generating electricity in 1983 but used in The Beatles' 1965 movie Help! and on the cover of Pink Floyd's 1977 album Animals.

  • The four great chimneys of the Grade II listed Battersea Power Station rise to become one of South London’s most notorious landmarks. In the foreground on Battersea Park Road is construction hoardings that yew hedges that act as an incongruous background with a bent phone box, recently damaged in a collision, and a bus stop at which a passenger awaits the next bus. • The Fire Garden, a performance delivered by the French performance group Carabosse, commisioned by Totally Thames, was an illuminating, artistic tribute, delivered on a monumental scale, to Battersea Power Station before it is closed for redevelopment. This was fire alchemy at its very best: the smell of wax, the hiss of steam, and the heat and glow of the multiple fires acknowledging and celebrating this iconic site's gritty, smoke belching, industrial past. Globes of fire and thousands of points of flickering flame illuminate the Power Station as musicians play a mix of old style Parisian music with moody improvised sounds. • View over the Thames and London from the new viewing platform at the Tate Modern Gallery. The building, originally Bankside Power station, was designed by the architect Sir Giles Gilbert Scott, who also designed Battersea Power Station and Waterloo Bridge. Constructed from a brick shell supported by an interior steel structure, its striking monumental design with its single central chimney, had often led it to be referred to as an industrial cathedral. The 360-degree rooftop viewing deck is one of the headline features of the Switch House – the 64.5-metre-high Tate Modern gallery extension by Herzog & de Meuron, opened to the public in June 2016.
