  • One of the warning signs alerting motorists of tidal dangers on the causeway between the tidal Lindisfarne island and the Northumbrian mainland, on 27th September 2017, on Lindisfarne Island, Northumberland, England. Despite tide timetables posted all over the area, drivers often mis-time their crossings, their vehicles ending up submerged in salt water. The small Lindisfarne population of just over 160 is swelled by the influx of over 650,000 visitors from all over the world every year. A tidal Island: Lindisfarne is a tidal island in that access is by a paved causeway which is covered by the North Sea twice in every 24 hour period. The Holy Island of Lindisfarne, also known simply as Holy Island, is an island off the northeast coast of England. Holy Island has a recorded history from the 6th century AD; it was an important centre of Celtic and Anglo-saxon Christianity. After the Viking invasions and the Norman conquest of England, a priory was reestablished.

  • An unidentified youth is seen climbing over a high security fence into a derelict basketball court in the Notting Hill area of West London, England. Half-way over the wire netting, the young man has put his right leg over the top to haul himself over the high barrier. In the distance we see the graffiti left by other kids, sprayed on to the concrete walls of the former sports place. This is an inner-city environment where lawless youth crime is prevalent.

  • A farm vehicle drives in winter light over the traditional stone bridge built from locally sourced materials over the Allt an Eas River at Eas Falls, near Kilbrennan, Isle of Mull, Scotland. Beneath the bridge is the fast-flowing river that curls downhill, falling steeply into the distant Loch Tuath with the Island of Ulva, the headland beyond. Eas Fors Waterfall is one of the most spectacular waterfalls on the island, situated just off the B8073, a couple of miles North of Ulva Ferry. Eas is Gaelic for waterfall, Fors is Norse for waterfall and the final fall plunges 100 feet over the edge of the cliff to the sea below.

  • Peering comically over a hedgerow, a Guernsey cow looks on in a field on the small British-owned Channel Island. Renowned for the rich flavour of its milk, as well as its hardiness and docile disposition descended from two breeds brought over from nearby France (Isigny cattle from Normandy and the Froment du Léon from Brittany) the 450 to 500 kg Guernsey produces around 6,000 litres per cow per year. Its milk has a golden colour due to an exceptionally high content of beta carotene, a source of Vitamin A, which helps reduce the risks of certain cancers. The milk also has a high butterfat content of 5% and a high protein content of 3.7% making it deliciously creamy. The island of Guernsey is divided into ten parishes and along with its larger and more commercial Jersey, is situated in the warm English Channel, nearer to French than the English coast.

  • A City of London Griffin looks over Farringdon Road, London. With its red eye and tongue almost touching two pedestrians below, we see its silver-painted skin Positioned at the boundary of what is called the Square Mile, the griffins are symbols of this ancient area of central London, a semi-autominous geographically-small City within Greater London, England. The City of London is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, its more modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but it is now only a tiny part of Greater London, approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area. London Bridge's history stretches back to the first crossing over Roman Londinium.

  • A now disused stone bridge (only used by grazing cattle) and winter bracken over the Coladoir River on Glen More, Isle of Mull, Scotland. The wide landscape view shows us the bridge's strength largely given by the beautiful workmanship by those using local materials for this road overpass. Only farm vehicles and small cars generally drive over but such structures need to withstand harsh winters where weather can help them deteriorate. An arch is a structure that spans a space and supports a load. Arches appeared as early as the 2nd millennium BC in Mesopotamian brick architecture and their systematic use started with the Ancient Romans who were the first to apply the technique to a wide range of structures.

  • Tourists lunge over the original 4th century start/finish line in the stadium at Olympia. Hercules is said to have paced out the 600 Greek feet - or Stadion - from which we get the word 'stadium'. On the grassy bank in the background is where the seating once accommodated the many sporting pilgrims who travelled to this place from all over Greece during agreed truces in the weeks of the Olympic festival. The 29th Olympics came home to Greece in 2004 and the birthplace of athletics, amid the woodland of ancient Olympia where for 1,100 continuous years, the ancients held their pagan festival of sport and debauchery. The modern games share many characteristics with its ancient counterpart. Corruption, politics and cheating interfered then as it does now and the 2004 Athens Olympiad echoed both what was great and horrid about the past.

Walking along the narrow pavement, one allows his older colleague to go ahead, so tight is the space. Heading out into sunlight, they carry on their journey on a warm lunchtime in the London borough of Southwark. The repairs appear to be imminent as the two cones, mark the place of damaged street items that protect the corner and building. Southwark is responsible for road works within its region of south London.

The aircraft is nearly at the point of touching down on the runway which is just beyond this street in Kowloon district in the days when Hong Kong was still a British colony and before its handover to Chinese law. The dominating shape of the jet is flying into the former airport called Kai Tak whose runway jutted out into the city’s harbour before the airfield was closed and a new location was opened in an outlying island. We look up to see a wide expanse of overcast sky with the red vertical Cantonese characters of a local business and which echoes the red beacon on the plane’s belly that flashes during the last moments of flight before the actual landing.

  • From beneath a stone bridge that crosses the Allt an Eas River at Eas Falls, near Kilbrennan, Isle of Mull, Scotland. The fast-flowing river curls downhill under the locally-sourced stonework to soon fall steeply into the distant Loch Tuath with the Island of Ulva, the headland beyond.

  • Detail of an arched stone bridge at Kinlochspelve, Isle of Mull, Scotland. The close-up view shows us the bridge's strength largely given by the beautiful workmanship by those using local materials for this road overpass.

  • A Virgin Atlantic Airbus A340 crosses the perimeter fence at Heathrow Airport on its way to an international destination. Seen from below, the passing Jumbo takes-off and climbs under full take-off power over the surrounding airfield security fence. Its razor-wire is an effective deterrent against protesters or terrorists and symbolises the lengths that airport authorities (in this case BAA) need go to to ensure their property is safe. The aircraft is seen almost entangled in the secure wire as if passing through the mesh. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009).

  • The flag of the City of London hangs in sunlight over gentlemen in the City of London, England UK. Young men walk along this narrow lane, passing below the flag that represents the capital's financial district also called the Square Mile, the oldest quarter of London, founded by the Romans in AD43. The flag of the City of London is based on the flag of England, having a centred red St George's Cross on a white background, with the red sword in the upper hoist canton (the top left quarter). The City is only a tiny part of the metropolis of Greater London, though it remains a notable part of central London. It holds city status in its own right and is also a separate ceremonial county.

Remains of the village were revealed during the drought of 1989 the levels of water dropped from the country's reservoirs as rainfall failed in the heatwave while demand peaked in the cities such as Sheffield. The villages of Derwent & Ashopton were submerged when the valley was flooded, between 1943 & 1945, amid much controversy. Derwent church tower was left standing at first, but demolished in 1947 for safety reasons. The remains of the buildings are still visible when the water is very low, as it was in 1989.

  • This black and white scene is in a City of London side street where a bicycle parked on a parking pole at a kerbside has somehow fallen over in the gutter. Fittingly, the parking bay is for specifically for a disabled motorist and that word has been stencilled in bold white lettering on the wet road surface after a rain shower. The pavement and tarmac glisten making it slippery but the bike has been left and there is no-one in this scene. Reflected inn the puddle is the modern architecture of the office building, also seen rising from street level.
