One girl wears a bikini featuring a patriotic Stars and Stripes and they both exchange knowing looks as the men choose to enter the pool alongside with a perfect view of young flesh. • Gathering outside their house in the East End of London, a family sits together to celebrate 50th anniversary of VE (Victory in Europe) Day on 6th May 1995. A man hangs out a Union Jack flag to accompany the Stars and Stripes on a washing line in the front garden. In the week near the anniversary date of May 8, 1945, when the World War II Allies formally accepted the unconditional surrender of the armed forces of Germany and peace was announced to tumultuous crowds across European cities, the British still go out of their way to honour those sacrificed and the realisation that peace was once again achieved. Street parties now – as they did in 1945 – played a large part in the country’s patriotic well-being.

  • We see the head and shoulders of a man in military uniform who stands motionless beside the American flag. he is at a graduation ceremony for United States Air Force pilots who have just passed a week-long survival courseheld at the Fairchild Air Force Base, Spokane, Washington. Its highy-trained personel conducts a survival, escape and evasion course which combat pilots and air crew need to pass before rejoining their units for real-time warfare. Conducted, in hangars and the surrounding forests, it forms part of an extensive physical and psychological assessment of young aviators on active service. In the future any one of them may be shot down behind enemy lines and need to use the lessons passed-on here to help facilitate their rescue by US forces. One pilot who passed this course in 1991, himself a Spokane-born boy, was F-16 pilot Scott O'Grady. He put his skills learned here to the test while evading Serb forces before being airlifted to safety and a hero's Presidential welcome.

  • A week after the September 11th attacks in New York and Washington DC, shrines and memorials started appearing in public places at various squares and street locations in Manhattan that commemorated the killed and missing citizens, lost in the ruins of terrorist devastation. Candle-lit vigils like this were maintained for weeks as people came together and shared a common grief, singing and praying and displaying American flags and often denouncing evil in the world. Emotions were running high and many citizens offered spiritual aide such as food and drink. In outpourings of grief, anger and patriotic rhetoric, flags were flown as never before as America sought to express their emotions and unity.

  • VW van parked opposite redundant farm buildings near Clarksdale. If you want to explore Clarksdale and the Blues country in true retro fashion the best place to do so is by staying at the Shack Up Inn. In The Promised Land: The Great Black Migration and How It Changed America, author Nicholas Lemman describes how, on Oct. 2, 1944, a crowd of 3,000 people quietly watched the first public demonstration of the mechanical cotton picker at Hopson's plantation in Clarksdale. At best, wrote Lemman, a skilled field hand could pick 20 pounds of cotton in an hour; the mechanical picker picked 1,000 pounds. Hopson calculated that a bale of cotton (500 pounds) cost $39.41 to pick by hand and $5.26 by machine. It wasn't too hard to foresee the future. Hopson was the first plantation to convert completely to the mechanical cotton pickers. Soon afterward, the sharecropper shacks where the plantation's workers had lived were abandoned and then torn down. But now they're back at the Shack Up Inn, Mississippi's oldest B&B -- and that's bed and beer, y'all. "We don't fool around with any fixing of breakfasts," said Bill Talbot, part owner of the inn.

  • During a journey into America's hinterlands, days after the September 11th attacks in New York and Washington DC, we see visitors watching a re-enactment of a Civil War skirmish at the Gettysburg National Military Park. As a group of Confederate troopers parade on the battlefield, we see printed on a woman tourist's back, the quoted words spoken by President George W Bush on 9/11/01. His rallying call to the nation, answering the demand for vengeance against the 'evil-doers' is included in his rhetoric, reproduced on clothing and on messages displayed around the US. The American Civil War's Battle of Gettysburg was fought in and around the town of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and was the one battle with the largest number of casualties: Between 46,000 and 51,000 killed in the three-days in July 1863.

  • During a journey into America's hinterlands, days after the September 11th attacks in New York and Washington DC, we see anti-war graffiti written in a circular chalk graphic on the path in front of the Lincoln Memorial of Washington DC's National Mall. The words 'Break the Cycle (of) War' appear as early morning joggers blur in the background beyond whom, the Washington Memorial is seen below the rising sun and a rising mist. Soon afterwards the graffiti was hosed away by park rangers, eager to remove anti-militarist and unpatriotic sentiments at a time before the military was about to mobilise once again with many American lives lost. In outpourings of grief, anger and patriotic rhetoric, flags were flown as never before as America sought to express their emotions and unity.

  • A Haitian sees the bright side as she sits outside her shelter erected opposite the Palace in Cham De Mars. The choice of cloth for her shack is symbolic and many Haitians are grateful for the aid and support from the US. some commentators, however, believe the relationship with the US two hundred miles away, is what needs to be looked at if things are to improve. One Haitian, Jocelyn, tells me: "They (The American government) take with one hand and give with the other. They swamped Haiti with cheap rice imports putting farmers out of business and forcing them into the capital's slums where they have been aid dependent ever since"

  • Known as 'Old Glory', a polished silver Boeing Mitchell B-25 is refuelled in readiness for a display flight at Oshkosh Air Venture, the world’s largest air show in Wisconsin USA. In afternoon light, a lady in a stars and stripes shirt stands arms behind her back admiring the lovingly restored polished twin-engine bomber, the most heavily armed airplane of the second world war used for high and low-level bombing, strafing, photoreconnaissance, submarine patrol and fighter. Close to a million populate the mass fly-in over the week, a pilgrimage worshipping all aspects of flight. The event annually generates $85 million in revenue over a 25 mile radius from Oshkosh. Picture from the 'Plane Pictures' project, a celebration of aviation aesthetics and flying culture, 100 years after the Wright brothers first 12 seconds/120 feet powered flight at Kitty Hawk,1903

  • American Eagle flags on crane on construction site in Manhattan, New York City. The red structure is on the roof of a new apartment development in lower Manhattan, New York City. The bald eagle was chosen June 20, 1782 as the emblem of the United States of American, because of its long life, great strength and majestic looks, and also because it was then believed to exist only on this continent. On the backs of gold coins, the silver dollar, the half dollar and the quarter, we see an eagle's head with the stars and stripes in the background - an image of strength and patriotism.

  • Seen in a close-up detail, we see a young woman's face, painted with an amalgamation of both the US and English flags during both countries opening World Cup group match. Having walked through Trafalgar Square, the location for many a sporting celebration and protest, the woman smiles to the viewer, her even teeth showing and hair brushed away from her face. But her allegiance is divided, a split loyalty for this football fan who is an American citizen but who lives in London - and so supports both teams. The blue and white Stars and Stripes appear in the top left corner and the red cross of St George horizontally across her cheeks and vertically down her nose.

  • Lit by the bight lights of Times Square in New York City, US flags hang from the scaffolding of a construction site four days after the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11th. Above the Stars and Stripes, we see fashion advertising bllboards showing white American models posed in contemporary couture proving that business and the media works endlessly to provide content and commerce amid the emotional turmoil and horrors of the terrorist attacks. Large white sheets pronounce prayers for the families of victims and to God Bless America.

  • Seen from the roof of a Federal building, an aerial view of Broadway in New York City. The straightness of the road with traffic consisting of yellow taxi cabs, trucks and tour buses make their way southwards in Lower Manhattan. The Stars and Stripes flag is seen hanging on the side of a skyscraper and pedestrians walk along pavements (sidewalks) on the right. The lighter shade building in the middle is the Woolworth Building whose address is 233 Broadway. Broadway was originally the Wickquasgeck Trail, carved into the brush of Manhattan by its Native American inhabitants. This trail originally snaked through swamps and rocks along the length of Manhattan Island. The road now runs 13 mi (21 km) through Manhattan and 2 mi (3.2 km) through the Bronx, exiting north from the city to run an additional 18 mi (29 km) through other municipalities.

  • Sprayed with aerosol and stencil on the pavement (sidewalk) in a Manhattan street near New York City’s Armory are the words "WTC RIP 9.11.2001" As if in recognition of the attacks on the World Trade Center that occured four days previously, pedestrians pass-by leaving dark, haunted shadows on the pavement as if suffering the horrors of what many witnessed on September 11th. A young girl is about to walk over the stencil and we see her US stars and stripes bandana wrapped around her head looking like the tv super-hero Wonder Woman.
