  • The soon to disappear market at Elephant & Castle shopping centre in the London borough of Southwark. Its demise will be welcome to many locals who see Elephant as an inner-city ghetto though gentrification at the expense of affordable housing provokes others to protest. Lend Lease is working in partnership with Southwark Council to deliver a £1.5 billion regeneration project in Elephant & Castle. Over the next ten years, we will build nearly 3,000 new homes, over 50 shops and restaurants, and a brand new park. The Elephant & Castle redevelopment is integral to Southwark’s wider regeneration plan, which includes the creation of a new pedestrianised town centre, market square, 5,000 new and replacement homes, approximately 500,000 square feet of retail and leisure space, an integrated public transport hub and five green spaces.

  • Elephant Stone at Bredon Hill, England, United Kingdom. Bredon Hill is a hill in Worcestershire, England, south-west of Evesham in the Vale of Evesham. The hill is geologically part of the Cotswolds and lies within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. However, as the result of erosion over millions of years, it now stands isolated in the Vale of Evesham. One large stone at the summit is called the Banbury Stone, deriving from Baenintesburg, a name for the fort in the 8th century. It is known colloquially as the Elephant Stone because of its resemblance to that animal.

  • Noy An, a female baby Asian elephant born in January 2015 at the Elephant Conservation Center (ECC) in Sayaboury province, Lao PDR. The ECC launched in association with the NGO ElefantAsia offers an innovative experience to visitors that combines conservation of the endangered Asian elephant with eco-tourism. Laos was once known as the land of a million elephants but now there are fewer than 900 living in the country. Around 470 of them are in captivity, traditionally employed by a lucrative logging industry. But captive elephants are often overworked and exhausted and as a consequence no longer breed. With only two elephants born for every ten that die, the Asian elephant, the sacred national emblem of Laos, is under serious threat of extinction. At the Elephant Conservation Center in Sayaboury province, the elephant nursery is an innovative reproduction project led by Lao mahouts and the Center. It relies on voluntary participation and aims to support mahouts involved in logging to bear the cost of breeding their elephant.
