  • Two crewmen aboard the US Navy aircraft carrier USS Harry S Truman sit on a fire vehicle on the ship's deck. Wearing red signifies that they are part of a crash and salvage team who respond to emergencies and fire hazards and so wear flame-retardant and anti-flash clothing material. Ordinarily they are responsible for making safe and towing (‘doing the bow dance’) $38 million F/A-18s fighters round the deck of the Navy’s newest aircraft carrier, here on coalition patrol somewhere off Kuwait in the Arabian Sea. The Truman is so called after the US President who was in office from 1945 to 1953. Strong corporate Ikea colours are dominant, their well-known yellow and blue are known throughout Europe as well as the added banner in red. • During a journey into America's hinterlands, days after the September 11th attacks in New York and Washington DC, a Cowboy.com ad (a software company) is seen on top of a pole at the roadside on Highway 27 in Mt Airy, near Baltimore, Maryland. At a time when a show of unity and patriotic support was important to Americans, many sought to express their anger and patriotic duty to send clear messages to those held responsible. "Don't Mess with the USA" was a favourite message but this internet company’s cowboy advert complete with stetson and mirrored glasses was also a popular motif favouring aggressive replies.

  • At the foot of a tree located opposite the charred Pentagon building days after the September 11th attacks in New York and Washington DC, children have made a makeshift memorial by placing a garland around the model of a military B52 bomber, a NASA space Shuttle, portrait of a smiling president George W Bush and their own interpretation of the attacks on the Twin Towers - with airliners flying towards those symbols of capitalism. Icons of American technology and patriotic success lie on the ground here beneath the tree near Arlington military Cemetery. In a show of unity, many of those gathered on the grass to view the damage done by terrorists worked for the government or defence organisations, their Hawkish rhetoric appearing to suggest heavy-handed retaliation on those held responsible.

With minutes to spare in warm sunshine, the man shows paternal instincts and sits at the bottom steps and tilts the unseen child seated safely in the family pushchair, pulling faces and keeping it entertained beneath the tall columns of this architecture in the Square Mile, the oldest and financial heart of the capital. The classic neo-Romanesque architecture of the Royal Exchange building has Doric and Ionic columns with their ornate stonework, designed by Sir William Tite in 1842-1844 and opened in 1844 by Queen Victoria). It’s the third building of the kind erected on the same site. The first Exchange erected in 1564-70 by sir Thomas Gresham but was destroyed in the great fire of 1666. It’s successor, by Jarman, was also burned down in 1838. The present building is grade 1 listed and cost about £150,000.

  • One shovel-full of road grit has been left in a small pile at the kerb of a side road in East Dulwich, South London. Left by workers from the borough of Southwark, this modest supply is symbolic of the controversial problem of local government running low on street grits and salts that help prevent thousands of traffic collisions and pedestrian falls every winter. In January of 2010 (following the equally snow fall of February 2009) councils were caught unprepared for adverse weather which virtually brought towns and cities and rural communities to a standstill. We look down at the fallen snow, trodden by countless pairs of boots which compress the snow and make it an often treacherous surface on which to tread.

The East Pier is resplendent with amusement rides and attractions that populate its long structure, jutting out into the calm English Channel beyond which is the French coast further south. The children are still in their school shirts, shorts and ties but have taken off their shoes and socks to frolic and enjoy some precious fresh-air and the freedom that childhood brings. According to British legal requirements, schoolchildren on away day visits must have accompanying adults with a ratio of 1:xx though it appears this group's quota is less with two teachers per 28 boys.
