  • A few miles from the finish line, this long-distance runner has stopped in agony to lean against the walls beneath Tower Bridge during th London Marathon, England. Pushing against the solid wall and stretching his cramped leg muscles, he grimaces in pain as other runners speed past on their way completing their personal race. Pushed to his limits, this man needs to continue a few more Kilometres to claim his medal and to claim victory. But he still has to overcome the pain of an overworked body. When glycogen runs low, the body must then burn stored fat for energy, which does not burn as readily. When this happens, the runner will experience dramatic fatigue. This is called "hitting the wall".

  • Taking a break from the London Marathon, a young runner dressed as Superman emerges from a Portaloo after a quick toilet stop. Located at the London Fire Brigade's station on Lower Thames Street in City of London in the capital's historic financial district, their empty fire hose snakes across the ground. The young man wears trainers, a red skirt, a Super-hero top with the Superman emblem on his chest and he walks out of the portable convenience adjusting a green frizzy wig. Disgarded mineral water bottles have been thrown on the ground by other passing athletes but this is a theatrical pun, that Superman changes personality, name and powers when leaving a telephone box. Apart from the colour (color) of the toilet, the runner and the hose, the background is drab and overcast. The City of London has a resident population of under 10,000 but a daily working population of 311,000. The City of London is a geographically-small City within Greater London, England. The City as it is known, is the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. The City of London is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area. London Bridge's history stretches back to the first crossing over Roman Londinium, close to this site and subsequent wooden and stone bridges have helped modern London become a financial success.

  • American tourists admire one of their number riding who has hired a rickshaw in Hong Kong on what is called The Peak. A US tourist sits on the cart that is going to be pulled by its runner. Fellow travellers are taking pictures and smiling at their friend taken away from their group. The word rickshaw came from Asia where they were mainly used as means of transportation for the social elite. In recent times the use of rickshaws has been discouraged or outlawed in many countries due to concern for the welfare of rickshaw workers. Runner-pulled rickshaws have mainly been replaced by cycle rickshaws and auto rickshaws. The term "rickshaw" is today commonly used for those vehicles as well. The word "rickshaw" originates from the Japanese word jinrikisha = human riki = power or force, sha = vehicle which literally means "human-powered vehicle".

  • A lone woman jogger runs past purple construction hoarding and a green taxi drivers' shelter. The runner exercises on a bright afternoon in a side street in Temple Place, close to Waterloo bridge. The garish purple stripe of colour contrasts the green foreground belonging to the Victorian structure. Because cab drivers weren't allowed to leave their vehicles when parked at a stand, it was difficult for them to get a hot meal while at work, so The Earl of Shaftesbury (God bless 'im) and a few philanthropic chums decided to create a cabbie's charity in 1874. Between 1875 and 1914, a total of 61 shelters were built at cost of around £200 each. Because the shelters stood on a public highway, the police stipulated that they weren't allowed to be any larger than a horse and cart.

  • Setting sun with jogger in Ruskin Park in the borough of Lambeth, south London. Ruskin Park, Denmark Hill, SE24 (its post code) is a beautiful green space in this inner-city suburban district of Britain's capital, approximately 5 miles south from the River Thames. The jogger paces past the image as the sun sets against period homes of the Edwardian era, the age of innovative building in the new 20th Century. The properties overlook the borough park named after John Ruskin, the renowned artist and commentator who lived in nearby Herne Hill. It looks an affluent area, a prosperous location to invest in a mortgage in uncertain times with market prices falling during the credit crunch and recession.

  • A jogger runs through passing commuters, on the southern end of London Bridge. With his pet dog, the man jogs past down towards the river down nearby steps. The City of London is a geographically small City within Greater London, England, the historic core of London from which, along with Westminster, the modern conurbation grew. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. This is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area. London Bridge's history stretches back to the first crossing over Roman Londinium, close to this site and subsequent wooden and stone bridges have helped modern London become a financial success.

  • When nearby offices have emptied on such a warm summer's afternoon, crowds of local workers and tourists sit on the steps between offices both old and new and beneath the towering dome of St. Paul's Cathedral. Entertaining the people is a lone pianist, playing an upright piano as part of City of London's play a piano music festival. Anyone able to play can simply sit on the stool and play the instrument as the feel like it and passers-by can enjoy unsung talents. A jogger dressed in yellow runs past but otherwise, those listening to the impromptu music sit with appreciative respect for the young black man, hunched over the keys.
