  • With feet up on airport seating, a migrant worker awaits his homeward flight from Bahrain to South-Asia. Sitting with legs gathered and with shoes removed - in the manner that people subjected to fierce desert or tropical heat try to keep cool, although in this airpirt terminal building, air-conditioning allows more comfort. The young man works on building projects somewhere in the middle-east region and is either in transit of beginning his jounrey to India, Pakistan or perhaps Bangladesh, seen here months before the terrorist attacks on America that changed the public's attitude to flying on commercial airliners.

  • An early morning commuter makes his way home after his night shift in central London to his home nearby in Herne Hill, SE24 - a distance of approximately 6 miles. Trudging on foot through ever-deepening snow, the showers are still falling as he makes his way along the deserted street. Street lighting makes this quiet landscape glow orange and we look down the road to see only a few parked cars at the kerbsides and the tracks of a few others that have already driven along. Thousands of snowflakes are fluttering to the ground, settling on this part of London's inner-city - an unusual event - and the heaviest precipitation for 18 years.

The lady might be old and frail but her spirit is such that she still finds the time to integrate into community life and remains active despite her years. Walking beneath the wrought-iron sign in Cleeve Prior, Worcestershire, she edges under tentatively to make her way home wearing a quilted coat and her wedding ring on her gnarled hands. A chilly late-morning sun shines across the architecture of the building and this is the look of a lady happy with her morning's activities with fellow parishioners.

Sensibly away from the edges, people are standing up to six-deep in anticipation of a ride home as the exodus to the suburbs hits its peak time. 37 per cent of workers in the capital used rail or underground travel as their main form of transport to work, according to regional and local statistics compiled by the Office for National Statistics.

  • Making their way across a snow-swept road in Norwood, south London, an elderly couple tread warily as the snow turns to slush. It's a bleak, raw morning as the new snowfall has settled on this suburban street where cars are parked on icy kerbs. Wearing sensible hats and coats and non-slip boots the pensioners are vulnerable to icy black spots which may endanger their stability because old people are susceptible to falls and injury at these hazardous times. A very monochrome landscape, we see little colour. Instead it is a scene of jeopardy and of an uncaring society for its older generations.

  • An elderly gentleman wearing a traditional bowler hat and carrying a folded newspaper descends the steps from the bright daylight to the dark of the London Underground, before making his way home from Royal Exchange at Bank Triangle by tube. He is one of the last examples of a bygone age, when many in London's financial district wore such work clothes - a way of typifying a breed of Englishness and class system, known all over, and still expected, around the world. Sadly, gents like this are very rare after modern fashions, lower standards and changed attitudes in the workplace meant that younger men no longer wanted to wear a stuffy outfit to work. The days of the bowler are fast disappearing. Behind him are the tall and solid Corinthian pillars of the 3rd Royal Exchange built in 1842 by Sir William Tite.

  • Grasping a Fuchsia shrub in his right hand, a man dressed in a dark pinstripe suit walks home along a Chelsea street having just left the Chelsea Flower Show on the last day of the show when members of the Royal Horticultural Society and the general public are invited to purchase those plants and shrubs that have been displayed all week. It is the perfect summer May afternoon in west London, when lovers of horticulture have gathered from across the country to admire the ultimate in plants and flowers in the grounds of Chelsea Hospital. With its pink blooms hanging from the main bulk of the shrub, the Fuchsia is resplendent, a scene of quintessential English gardens and long summer days.

  • Near the junction of the 400 to Buckhead, the 401 highway divides and splits during afternoon rush-hour traffic which slows and builds up so that vehicles and cars back-up as they head home and out of Downtown Atlanta, Georgia. The inner median is coned off during some construction work which slows the traffic even more. Crossing the 5-lane road comes a train of Atlanta's own mass-transit system, the MARTA network and it approaches the overpass with care. We see the infrastructure of a modern metropolis at the busiest time of day when the exodus to get home puts the roads and feeder lanes under the most pressure. Fortunately, the weather is fine with good visibility making drivers' journeys a little shorter and more tolerable but it shows too America’s habit and dependency on car culture.

  • Having just disembarked from a Carnival Cruise ship at the port of Miami, Florida, two tourists carry and pull their baggage along to a waiting coaches that will transport them for onward journeys. Comically they also wear wide sombrero hats bought in Cancun during their vacation around the Gulf of Mexico, the destination of this popular cruise line whose base is Miami. Stitched with garish colours the souvenirs provide shelter from the overhead tropical sun though the woman of this couple chooses to hang hers over a shoulder and keeps her original hat on her head. This may be the couples' honeymoon or just a special annual holiday away from the kids or a humdrum lifestyle where the weather is far from the intensity of Florida, a favourite resort for Americans not liking foreign travel.

  • A 12 year-old boy walks along a frozen rural road with his pet dog following alongside during wintry conditions in North Somerset. The viewer also follows on as the lad walks towards his home on a hill, set near the bare mid-winter trees during a particularly nasty period of the Christmas holiday period. The boy's house is in the distance with wood smoke curling from two chimneys. The smoke wafts across the remote road in the Mendip Hills, recently cleared of snow but still deceptively icy. The low sun is slightly obscured by bare branches and offers little warmth to this bleak landscape.

  • Commuters crossing London Bridge pass a City of London boundary griffin, on the southern Southwark bank of the Thames. The griffin statue marks the southern boundary between Southwark on the south side and the City of London beyond on the bridge. The City of London is a geographically-small City within Greater London, England. The City's boundaries have remained constant since the Middle Ages but it is now only a tiny part of Greater London. The City of London is a major financial centre, often referred to as just the City or as the Square Mile, as it is approximately one square mile (2.6 km) in area. London Bridge's history stretches back to the first crossing over Roman Londinium, close to this site and subsequent wooden and stone bridges have helped modern London become a financial success.

  • It is 07.45 on a dark, wintry morning and from behind, we follow a lone commuter who walks along a snow-covered path in Ruskin Park, an otherwise green space in the south London borough of Herne Hill, Lambeth. Street lights are still illuminating the road in the background and the blue light of early morning has fast becoming another day of snow showers and chilly temperatures. No grit or salt has been sprinkled on this slippery path and the person walks carefully carrying an umbrella from falling sleet which is soon to turn to rain as the temperature rises. Tall ash trees whose trunks form an avenue of cover and the commuter proceeds towards their neighbours to the station beyond. A single 4x4 car makes its way through this still quiet street with lights blazing.

  • A helium-filled Welcome Home balloon floats in the air in Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5 arrivals hall. Three families have gathered to meet their respective sons who have been travelling around the world during their university gap year sabbatical trip of a lifetime. Floating upwards, the balloon is brightly coloured amid the hectic concourse where other relatives greet their loved-ones after months away from home on their adventures. This is a tradition practised across the world's airports where families are separated by the need to travel or work in other countries and the emotion of meeting again after long absences is always hard. From writer Alain de Botton's book project "A Week at the Airport: A Heathrow Diary" (2009).
