  • Queen Victoria & Victorian gentleman lookalikes attending the Pearly Kings and Queens Harvest Festival celebrations at Guildhall Yard. The annual event features early English entertainment including maypole dancing, Morris dancers and a marching band. The Chelsea pensioners & all the mayors of London take part in this traditional London event.<br />
The London tradition of the Pearly Kings and Queens began in 1875, by Henry Croft. Inspired by the local Costermongers, a close-knit group of market traders who looked after one another and were recognisable by buttons sewed onto their garments, Henry went out on the streets to collect money for charity, wearing a suit covered in pearl buttons to attract attention. When demand for his help became too much, Henry asked the Costermongers for assistance, many of whom became the first Pearly Families. Today, around 30 Pearly Families continue the tradition to raise money for various charities.

  • A detail of a defaced Queen Hatshepsut in temple of Amun at Karnak at the Temple of Amun at Karnak, Luxor, Nile Valley, Egypt. Queen Hatshepsut reigned from 1473 to 1458 BC but her successor Tuthmosis III quashed an Asiatic uprising and records of Hatshepsut disappeared. Tuthmosis III was finally able to claim his rightful place as King of Egypt and all images of Hatshepsut were attacked; statues, reliefs and shrines all were defaced. While the queen was damaged, the Gods either side in this painting were left untouched. The Karnak Temple Complex is the largest religious building ever made, covering about 200 acres. It comprises a vast mix of decayed temples, chapels, pylons, and other buildings built over 2,000 years and dedicated to the Theban triad of Amun, Mut, and Khonsu.

  • New recruits of the Royal Gurkha Regiment swear allegiance to Her Majesty the Queen’s portrait during their passing-out parade at their camp at Pokhara, Nepal. After being recruited into the regiment after a gruelling series of tests to eliminate the weaker and less able candidates, the lucky 160 fly to the UK for basic training. 60,000 boys aged between 17-22 (or 25 for those more educated to become clerks or communications specialists) report to designated recruiting stations in the hills each November, most living from altitudes ranging from 4,000-12,000 feet. After initial selection, 7,000 are accepted for further tests from which 700 are sent down here to Pokhara in the shadow of the Himalayas. Only 160 of the best boys succeed in the journey to the UK. Nepal has been supplying youth for the British army since the Indian Mutiny of 1857
